| Freak369's Full Review: LEGO - Recon Ray |
Over the years the boys have had a lot of Lego favorites but I remember vividly the first time that they saw the huge AquaZone set up at Toys 'R Us. It was a large plastic enclosure with lights, sounds, buttons and moving pieces. They stood, like little zombies, drool forming on the corner of their mouths. That's when I knew that they would be hard core Lego fanatics for a long, long time. The AquaZone series is impressive because it allows kids the freedom to use their imagination and at the same time they can use elements from other themes to make the underwater vehicles larger, more detail and better in battle. Some of the sub themes include the Aquaraiders, Hydronauts, Aquasharks and Stingrays. The Recon Ray is a cool little ship that can be used as a transport or rescue vehicle and you just dont see that type of stenciled detail on sets that are released now.
Lego AquaZone Recon Ray 6107
The Recon Ray is extremely easy to build but what you end up with looks impressive and most of that can be chalked up to the heavily stenciled front end of it. It has a tiger shark type look to it and the yellow and brown colors of the design look sweet on the flat gray element. This is one of the reasons why the older sets and pieces are in such high demand; not only did they have more detail but they were able to withstand a lot more use and abuse without showing much damage. It's a one person recon vehicle that's guided by a single propeller on the rear. You can add others to it if you have extras from other sets but as it is, out of the box, its not a bad design.
Even though you only get one figure it is well done and has its own scuba system. This is the old school style with a lot of textured detail to it and while it is removable it looks a lot better with it on than with it off. A majority of the figure is in gray with some red stenciling; the red hands are a nice touch too. The accessories of the ship and set are what really make this worth getting. There are three silver pieces in the set and these are a little more delicate than the others. The sharp spear, crystal / rock formation and small knife all have a silver finish to them and they will tarnish if you handle them too much. One thing you can do is coat them with a clear sealer to protect them or just make sure you wipe them off when you are done with them. The rest of the ship is pretty boring but you can add to it if you want. It takes only a couple minutes to build and the instructions give you a step by step build process.
If you were into the AquaZone series and liked what the theme had to offer then chances are you will really love the Stingray mini series. This was an add on theme to the AquaZone series and it added some really nice vehicles and figures to the line up. The Sea Creeper was available in both a bagged and boxes set so depending on where you are getting it, it could be listed as set 6109 or 6140. This series shouldnt be confused with the updated and newer Aqua Raiders series; while equally interesting it is a completely different theme. It is part of the AquaZone family but they were released in 2007 whereas most of the others were released before 2000. The mini series includes:
6107 Recon Ray
6109 Sea Creeper
6160 Sea Scorpion
6198 Sting Ray Stormer
This is an older set so if you were to start looking for it online you might be paying upwards of eight dollars for it, smaller local toy stores may have these but again, because it is an older set you are going to pay more for it. It was originally listed at about four dollars so if you bought a ton of these you could double your investment. If you only want the stenciled pieces you could buy them for a fraction of the set price from a brick vendor or broker; I highly suggest going with someone that is reputable like Baylit [Bricks As You Like Them] or you could check Lego fan boards to see if anyone is selling the sets or pieces.
If you find this for about four dollars it is definitely worth getting, especially if you have AquaZone sets. You can use fishing line to suspend this from a scene or use it as an underwater rescue vehicle. The only limits there are to the set are the ones that you place on it. Because of the small elements this is recommended for kids ages six old older and you would be wise to make sure the knife and shark spear are put away when you are done because they will do a number on your feet if you step n them. Sure, the set could have been bigger but this is a small add on set that looks great and serves an awesome purpose in the series.
