| Freak369's Full Review: LEGO - Scorpion Tracker |
Being a fan of Lego sets for more years than I care to mention, I have collected a lot of interesting sets. When the designers introduced the Egypt line in the Adventurers series it was something that I fell in love with right away. Sure there were a few sets that I felt were a little thin on pieces but overall it gave kids [and adult Lego lovers] the chance to build unique scenes, learn a little about Egyptian history and truly enjoy recreating authentic scenes of pharaohs, burial grounds and searching for hidden treasures. This isnt a set that you need to have to complete any scene but it sure is nice to add on to the larger sets. There are some nice pieces in the set, a nifty map piece and of course the explorer that has nothing on his mind but finding treasure, gems and jewels.
Scorpion Tracker
I wont go so far as to say that this is an exact duplicate of the "Island Racer" from the Adventurers series but it is pretty darn close. The biggest differences are the color, size and accessories that come with it. Its a two seat vehicle that has a nice storage area in the back section; great for tools, weapons and any items that you may come across along the way. As I have mentioned in other set reviews, sometimes its the accessories and extras that you get with a set that really help to warrant the suggested retail price. In this one it is most definitely the binoculars, pick axe, shotgun, pistol, long handle shovel and black scorpions that make this a true collectors item.
The Scorpion Tracker isnt exactly a fancy vehicle; it gets the figure from point A to point B, can carry stuff and if you have pieces from other sets you can attach a winch to the front or rear of it to help pull or tow things around. I like the color of it, sort of looks nice with the larger tan colors buildings in the series and doesnt make it stand out and look out of place when its combined with sets in the Egypt line. Another great perk to this is the wheels, they are made of rubber and have deep treads on them, great for getting around in the sand and going over rocks and obstacles. Its not the most modern of things either, one look at the front grille section and youll sort of peg this as an early 㣂s model but its no detailed enough to really pin it down to an exact era. It is easy to build and the double sided instruction sheet walks you through its construction in about five minutes.
Since there are only 34 pieces to the set its really not much fun as a stand alone type thing. It does make for a nice collectors item if you are into all thing Egyptian but if this is the only set that a child [or an adult] has to tinker around with, you can expect the fun to last about ten minutes. For me this was a set that I really liked; you get a functional vehicle and a lot of cool accessory pieces that can be used with the other sets in this series as well as the Adventurers. Thats one of the redeeming qualities of Lego sets, if you get bored with one aspect of it you can always tear it down and build something else with it. One of the boys favorite things to do was to try to get all the map pieces from the different sets to try and build a large wall map on the inside of one of the buildings. They were a little bummed out when they realized that all the pieces were almost identical but that didnt stop them from swiping the pieces every time I opened a set.

The Bottom Line
Sadly, the people at Lego decided to can the Adventurers series and move on to other themes. This set was widely available when it was in production and carried a suggested retail price of $3.00 - $4.00 dollars. In late 1999 and early 2000 these sets started to fly off shelves when the series was killed off. You can still find it at smaller online toy stores as well as on eBay but I wouldnt pay more than five or six dollars for it. It is a nice set to add to the series but if someone is asking ten bucks for it, start looking around and make use of search engines [Google is a great place to start] to try and find Lego fan sites that are selling it for a more reasonable price. Like I said, it isnt a complete necessity that you get this set but it does add a little bit of extra zip to a scene, just dont spend and arm and a leg on it!
