From a qualitative assessment, this model is a bargain! The price/parts ratio is great at only 15 cents for each part. ($60 USD, 396 pieces). It also comes with fully functioning moveable and rotating parts that are fun to play with.
A major plus and selling point for me is that it contained R4-P44 Astromech droid. The R4-P44 Astromech is exclusive only to the ARC-170 Starfighter kit. In addition, the kit also contains mini-figures of "Kit Fisto" and "Captain Jag" and a clone pilot are included. I also find the model to be a well designed and realistic looking replica. The fighter is composed of many complex parts that were custom built for this specific model. Some of the notable features include a great amount of detail are the dual turbine engines and the smooth flowing shape of the fuselage.
That expanding wings are the models highlight feature. There is a small spindle with a knob on it at the bottom of the craft, and when rotated the X-wings expand. The mechanism behind it is solid, and relies on a set of gears and rubber bands to spread the wings apart. All the mechanical components used to move the wings are exposed and its pretty neat to see how it all works if I say so myself. Another cool feature is the onboard missiles which can be fired. The same spindle mechanism which rotates to move the wings can also be pressed in to fire 4 missiles. Other movable features include dual turrets at the rear and opening canopies.
One thing that bothers me is the abundance of sticker decals that are used on items such as control panels, computer screens and other various details. Although adding decals to the model enhances the build experience, they have tendency to peel off or fade, reducing the overall image. Needless to say, I would much rather prefer parts that already have the details printed on.
Keep in mind that moveable parts are delicate by nature and will have tendency to come undone. It's usually really easy to put them back together, but it can be annoying to be continually repairing these areas. When you factor in the harsh environment children put their toys through it may be a wise idea to use some rubber cement or model adhesive to glue some of the critical parts together.
