| Freak369's Full Review: LEGO Star Wars Jabba's Prize 4476 |
The newest series of Star Wars Lego sets have finally started arriving at local toy stores after being hyped for a few months in the Lego Magazine. While some stores are only stocking a few of these new set, others made plenty of room and are regretting doing so. The sets arent exactly flying off the shelves because bluntly they arent all that great. Yeah, I know, a Lego fanatic that isnt thrilled about a new installment sometimes that happens. This is a small set that retails for about $6.99 but in all honesty its a $5.00 set at best. If that sounds a bit harsh coming from a Lego fanatic like myself then that should serve as a real warning to the casual collector.
The biggest perk of the set is that the frozen Han Solo piece has the ability to tip forward to release him. As the story goes, Boba Fett captures Han and gets a pretty penny when he is delivered in his frozen state to the large and in charge Jabba. Please keep in mind that this is a small set and wont have the complete impact of the whole scene. If you are interested in collecting other sets that will work well with this one I suggest Jabbas Message [4475] which sells for about $6.49 or go all out with Jabbas Palace [4480] which sells for around $30.00. Sadly, there arent more sets that work with these the primary color of these three sets is a light cream color. To try and add other sets will only ruin the continuity of the color scheme and leave you with a really nasty looking scene.
Jabbas Prize
Lego decided to release a few more sets from the Classic Star Wars line to try and get the jump on summer toy sales. While I am a die hard Lego fan I cant help but wonder if these sets were rushed through the planning stage. Built upon an 8x8 flat baseplate the scene is small but when combined with other sets in the series it redeems itself. Of course this also means that you will have to fork out money for the other sets. There really isnt a lot that you can do with the set as a stand-alone so be prepared to purchase others if you dont have other Lego sets or pieces. Out of a possible ten rating, this gets a seven and honestly, that is being pretty generous.
Instructions
Following the instructions for this set you will end up with a small but interesting scene that centers around the frozen Han Solo element. You are shown how to assembly both the guard and Boba Fett and then how to build the actual scene. The small sixteen page booklet is well illustrated and walks you through building the structure in twelve steps. This would be a great set for those that are just starting to get into Legos as well as those that have had a little bit of experience with Duplo sets. There really isnt much room for error when building this set however since it is pretty basic if you do make a mistake it wont take too much time to correct it.
Figures
There are three characters included with this set; two standard Lego sized figures and one of Han Solo encased in carbonite. Some people have mistaken the Gammorean Guard for Jabba The Hutt when talking about this set, Jabba is not included with this set but can be found in Jabbas Palace [4480].
Gammorean Guard
Mistaken for Jabba The Hutt by some people, this guard is extremely nice! Lots of detail in the face and a solid one-piece head and torso design. Normally these all-inclusive pieces arent very detailed but this one is the exception. Since it is all one color a funky green shade some of the design is lost when you look at this from a distance. His only accessory is a large axe that can be gripped in either hand. Since this is on the large side you might find that he tips over if the axe is positioned the wrong way. Under the one-piece torso element there is a bare bones brown body that is almost completely hidden when assembled. The similar colored green legs and hand pieces are a very nice touch.
Boba Fett
Appearing in only three Star Wars Lego sets, the Boba Fett figure is a great find. The nicely stenciled torso mixes well with the helmet and gives the figure a true to life look well as close as you can get when dealing with Lego figures that is. The head peg is plain so dont expect to find any detail to it when you open the box. Boba comes with a loudhailer and the standard backpack. Since this hasnt been featured in many sets, this small one is a great way to get it without spending a fortune for the larger sets.
Han Solo
The Han Solo piece is pretty rare and has only been featured in a few Star Wars sets. The piece always reminds me of Anthony Michael Hall in Sixteen Candles when he is trapped under the glass coffee table. This is a tall thin flat piece that has a lot of different uses within this and other Star Wars sets but if getting your hands on this piece is your sole reason for buying this set you can pick it up from brick brokers for about $2.00 - $3.00. To get the most out of this piece make sure that you protect it when it isnt being used. I invested in some small plastic bags for the unique pieces and while it might be a little bit of a pain to get them in and out to play with it does protect them against getting scratched.
The Bottom Line
I guess I had really high hopes for this part of the Star Wars series and was a little let down that they werent as impressive as the others. Dont get me wrong, there isnt anything wrong with the set but it is a little over marketed. This is however a great chance to collect the figures and allow the newer fans of the series to collect some great pieces. Even though I wasnt too excited when I opened this and built it, the boys really liked having some new Star Wars sets to add to their collection.
