Pros: Small, inexpensive, easy and fun.
Cons: Getting those S-Foils to look just right is a bit tricky...
The Bottom Line: For the Lego/Star Wars fanatic on your list, it's a no brainer. Small, good looking and inexpensive. Darn near perfect.

| Mr_D's Full Review: LEGO Star Wars MINI X-Wing Fighter / TIE Advanced ... |
It's been two years since I've actually written a review on Epinions, (a little more actually) and though I still use the site to read other peoples ideas on products, I've been a little short on time and ambition.
Not that my personal history is why you're reading this, but that's why I am writing about these little guys from Lego. Sure, they aren't brand new, but many times great things can slip through the cracks - and a little later we decide to pick them up. Point being, this item is so cool, it compelled me to tell you just how cool it is. :)
But I didn't pick this little diddy up, it was given to me as a gift. Being a huge Lego fan, and an even bigger Star Wars fan, I am very easy to buy gifts for. So, someone grabbed a couple of these sets for me - And like our other esteemed reviewers, was a bit skeptical. I had received two of the sets, one with Slave One (Boba/Jango Fett's ship) and with "Jedi Starfighter", which was Obi-Wan's ship in Episode II. The other was the X-Wing and Tie Advanced (more commonly known as Vader's Tie), of course, being the Star Wars geek I am, I opened the X-Wing/Tie set first.
This particular review focuses on the X-Wing/Tie set. I am going to make the assumption you are familiar with Legos and Lego sets, and with Star Wars. If not, do a Google search. :)
Quickly, my skepticism turned to joy when I assembled the products and looked at them. At only 76 pieces, it took me about 5 minutes or so to get both ships put together, and most of that time was spent trying to get the S-Foils on the X-Wing to look JUST so. I still don't think I have them quite the way I want them, but hey...
So I had the models built, they fit in the palm of my hand - which in and of itself was endearing, it was like Micro-Machines meets a Kitten and magically gets transformed into a Star Wars toy. So many good things in one small package, I felt almost child like with my giddyness.
Both ships, the X-Wing and the Tie, despite their small size and low piece count, look exceptionally good, close up and especially at a distance. Of course, you are getting low to no frills, but there is engine "glow" on the back of the tie, movable S-Foils on the X-wing and even an attempt to recreate the dome cockpit on the tie as well. All in all, I was exceptionally pleased, and in fact, I replaced two other lego sets that had been on my CD holder for about 5 years with them. That's how cool these little guys are.
Now the coolest part is this - If you buy all 4 of the lego mini sets, there are enough "extra" pieces tossed in to the sets that you can build a Tie Bomber. It's like getting a 5th toy for free.
So no, there are no mini-figs. They are small, slightly fragile with their size, and they don't pack in a ton of detail - but especially for those older "kids" out there, they may just be the perfect decoration or knick-knack, at an extremely low price. For the Lego/Star Wars fanatic on your list, it's a no brainer.
