| Freak369's Full Review: LEGO Star Wars Mini Heroes Collection I |
When I started going through my Star Wars collection of toys, books, Lego's and film souvenirs I started to wonder why the Lego designers included the baddies in the Star Wars Mini Heroes Collection. Surely Darth Vader cant be considered a hero now can he? Aside from the title of this series you wont find me complaining very often about the figures, accessories or overall appeal. Yeah, thats right, time for another Lego review.
Much like the Ninja and City Mini Heroes Collection sets, this edition showcases the most prominent characters from the beloved films. This is a great way to stock up on characters or to pick up figures that are only available in larger, more expensive sets. Even if you have 10 Luke Skywalker figures in your collection can you really, honestly have too many of them? See, I didnt think so.
Han Solo
Looking much like his movie counterpart, Han Solo is one of the best Star Wars figures due to the massive amount of detail and articulate stenciling. His shirt and vest are rather basic but true to form for his character. Look a little lower and youll see the ornate pattern on the belt [leg to torso connector] as well as the holster that starts on the right hip and carries over to the right leg. This type of detail is something that is rarely seen on Lego figures and it is an awesome sight. This particular Han Solo figure is only available in two Lego sets, this one and the massive Millennium Flacon [set 7190]. If you are looking for an inexpensive way to boost your stock of Han Solo figures, other than purchasing them from brick brokers, this is the way to go.
Han comes with no extras or accessories but he does feature a nice sculpted hairpiece. This is removable and can be replaced with any other hairstyle you choose however after experimenting with different styles, this one seemed to work the best. Han is one of my all time favorite characters from the Star Wars saga and thanks to the designers at Lego, hes one of my favorite figures as well.
Boba Fett
It seems that this figure is a little more rare than I originally thought. After doing some checking with my little local Lego club I found out that Boba was only featured in three Lego Star Wars sets and only two of them have the green uniform. This fact makes this set even more attractive for collectors of Legos as well as Star Wars merchandise.
Boba is a moderately stenciled and detail figure with green, light gray and black being the predominate colors on his uniform. Chances are the first thing you will notice about this figure is the helmet. While this is one solid piece, the recessed portion of the visor makes this look a bit more complex than it really is. Some sets come with the head peg already inserted into Bobas helmet if this is the case then make sure you take a peek under the helmet for a very cool surprise. [Email me if you really cant stand the suspense].
Boba only comes with one accessory, a gun and for the Star Wars purists Ill call it by its correct name a loudhailer. Now this is where the controversy comes into play. According to my dictionary a loudhailer is a portable loudspeaker with a microphone and loudspeaker. So, is it a weapon or something used for communication? Thats something that should be left up to personal interpretation since in other sets [Star Wars and otherwise] it is represented as a weapon.
Check out the back portion of the figure to see the green attached tanks. This is one of the many little perks that make this entire set well worth the price. Overall this figure is simply awesome. If you are looking to track down the Boba Fett figure in another Lego set, you will have to purchase the Slave I ship [set 7144]. Much like Han Solo, this is a great way to collect the figures without having to sell internal organs to do so.
Luke Skywalker
Clad in a black cape to avoid detection, Luke Skywalker is a very impressive figure. The first thing I noticed about this figure was the total lack of emotion in regards to the face. Straight eyebrows, straight mouth no emotion whatsoever. Its just an optical illusion but his eyes look smaller as well but after checking it out further they are indeed the same size as the rest of the mini figures eyes.
Lukes black cape comes packaged in a small white box, so be sure to hunt this down before you start tossing out the plastic wrappers. The cape is stiff and might look a bit strange at first it sort of sticks out from the figure and makes you want to say baby got back. By far Lukes best feature is the sculpted black hood that frames his face. While this isnt a rare piece it is a Star Wars series exclusive piece.
With this set you also receive a lightsaber [clear yellow] and a hilt [silver]. If you are planning on displaying these and not using them within sets then you should be fine however if you are going to add these to existing sets or scene you might want to protect the silver element before doing so. A thin coating of clear nail polish does the trick every time. The lightsaber can be handled by any of the figures in this set so feel free to mix and match the pieces and accessories until you find a combination that you feel comfortable with.
Display Stands
Each of the figures included with this set comes with a gray display stand and etched Star Wars logo on the front part of the base. There is a small 2x2 grid that the figure can be placed on for displaying so you can either have the figure standing or sitting. With other sets in the Star Wars Mini Heroes Collection you receive two of the same figure, its nice to have the ability to have one of them sitting and the other standing so you can see the full scope of the figure.
Each of the figures has its own personal data card that has a small fact about them on the back side, the reverse side has a somewhat distorted image of a background scene that is use to frame the figure on the display stand. The photo shown at the top of the page gives you a nice view of the completed figures when they are attached to the bases and the background cards are in place. If you choose to encase your figures you might want to measure the overall dimensions and head to a craft store to hunt down small plastic boxes. These are inexpensive, help to protect your figures and keep them free of dust.
The Bottom Line
Can you imagine the look on a Star Wars fans face if they receive this set? Ive given more than a few of these to friends who are addicted to collecting the merchandise from the films and they were all more than pleased with the sets, detail and overall presentation and depiction of the characters. If you have a Star Wars junkie in your midst, give them a little giggle with this set.
For those that are serious collectors of Legos or Star Wars items, this would make an excellent addition to your stash. Regardless of whether you keep them boxed or put them out for display, this will be a set that will increase in value over time. You can still pick these up at the Lego website for $4.99 a small price to pay for the value you receive.
