| Freak369's Full Review: LEGO Star Wars Speeder Bikes |
If you haven't guessed by now, I am a huge Star Wars fan. My enthusiasm for Star Wars can only be match by my love for Lego's. Until I had kids I was one of those people you see at a toy store with a cart full of stuff saying "Oh, this is for my nephew." No more! I am shopping guilt free these days.
I think my obsession for both Star Wars and Lego's clouded my judgment on buying this set. As I mentioned in an earlier review, I got a majority of these Lego's at K Mart when they had a sale. Buy one set get one of equal or lesser value for free. Now, who in their right mind could ever pass up something that tempting? The sale lessened the blow of the price, $8.99. I was a little shocked considering that the box was so small. I mean, after all, it is only plastic.
This set is essential, not for the speeder bikes but for the Imperial Troopers. The bikes themselves are nice but not very sturdy. The cannons fall off and it's extremely hard to get the Troopers hands to fit on the bike itself. Have fun trying to get the mast pieces to stick to the top part of the cannon. The speeder bike also tips forward too easily.
The instructions started out easy but got progressively harder to understand. To this day I am not sure what the "tree" is supposed to accomplish. You can't have a chase scene through a forest with just one tree. I bought two sets and opened both for the Troopers. The pieces for the speeder bikes were used to make some cool additions to the Anakin's Podracer Lego set. I did assemble one of the bikes and soon found the many pitfalls I just discussed. Determined to have a well rounded collection of Star Wars Lego's I hunted down the Super Glue and reinforced all the weak spots.
Some people say that these toys were made to collect; meaning you put them together, put them on a shelf and look at them. Try that in my house and you'll have four boys plotting against you. My boys were happy with one assembled speeder bike and the spare pieces from the other three. We are in the midst of assembling a huge Star Wars Lego scene using all the sets (23 total) and have the speeder bike suspended from the ceiling with fishing line.
While I obviously love Star Wars and Lego's but I have to say that only hard core collectors should invest in this set. Prices range from $7.99 to $10.99 depending on the store and area. The bikes aren't very stable and the small "tree" that comes with the set serves a purpose that has yet to be revealed to me.
