Sure it's a top rated "quick pick" on Consumer Reports, but they only tested it for a few weeks in the lab. The real world shows this model has a mold problem. The general consensus is that this is a great washer, as long as you don't put in too much soap, and don't get mold problems.
Google for this problem and you'll see the core problem: The tub does not drain completely, and the rubber seal on the spinning drum collects water. To drain the thing properly is a real pain -- down on your hands and knees and you can never really get it properly dry between the inner and outer tub.
On May 6, 2008, Chimicles & Tikellis LLP, filed a consolidated class action complaint in the District Court for the District of New Jersey against LG Electronics on behalf of consumers who purchased allegedly various LG models. Google to find the full text of the lawsuit, which is really revealing. Or, see here http://chimicles.com/case/lg-front-load-washing-machine-moldmildew
If you've got one, rather than using bleach, try the products of http://www.smellywasher.com, which work well. And if you're buying new, consider the washer products of Staber ( http://www.staber.com/ ), a USA native company that has a design that's a hybrid top load and front load washer, which curiously needs to transmission, and thus has no transmission to break.
The LG is going back to the store... but I don't know what we'll get instead.
Update: I just learned of a second law firm plunging into the wash: http://sfmslaw.com/pages/cases.php?id=561 Shepherd, Finkelman, Miller & Shah, LLP.
