longjourney's Full Review: LG DLE0442 Electric Dryer
LG DLE0442 Clothes Dryer
When our dryer started making loud squealing noises, my wife jumped at the chance get a new one. "I can fix it," I insisted, but she would hear none of that. In a flash, she was on the Internet checking dryer reviews and prices. In a few days, she had decided on the LG DLE0442 dryer. Little did I know that apparently, there is some unwritten rule that says when you buy either a washer or a dryer you must buy the matching one as well, so she had also picked out the LG WM0642H front loading washer.
We found the best deal on these models at The Home Depot. I don’t remember the exact price, but I know it was between 750 and 800 dollars for the dryer. They were delivered a week later. Installation went smoothly and we began getting acquainted with the new machines.
Description: This dryer is a front loading unit with a 7.3 cubic foot load capacity. It measures 30 inches deep by 27 inches wide by 42 ¾ inches high. The door, which has a window in it, can be installed to open either to the right or left. On top of the dryer at the back is the usual control panel assembly providing controls and indicators for operation of the dryer. There are eleven buttons, not counting the power button, one dial, and a time and status indicator. Many of the buttons have multiple selections and separate indicator lights for each.
The buttons in the section labeled Option are More Time, Less Time, Damp Dry Beep, Wrinkle Care, Rack Dry, and Antibacterial. The More Time and Less Time buttons add or subtract time from the normal time. When the Damp Dry Beep button is set, a beep sounds to indicate that the load is 80 percent dry. The Wrinkle Care button tells the dryer to tumble periodically after the load has finished to help prevent wrinkles if the clothes cannot be removed right away. Rack Dry is used when the accessory drying rack is placed in the dryer to dry shoes, sweaters, or other items that shouldn’t be tumble dried. To kill bacteria, the Antibacterial button causes the dryer to use a high temperature cycle. The Antibacterial button doubles as the control for the child lock. When the child lock is set all the buttons will be locked and the Child Lock indicator is lit.
One of the most useful features of this dryer is that it can be set for sensor dry or manual dry. When a sensor dry setting is used, the dryer senses the moisture level of the clothes and shuts off at the appropriate level, depending on the setting of the Dryness Intensity Control. The Dryness Intensity Control allows the user to set the level to one of five settings from "Damp Dry" to "Very Dry." The temperature is also manually adjustable by using the Temp Control. This button allows the user to set the temperature to one of five settings from "Ultra low" to "High."
The Time Dry button allows the user to set the drying time from 20 minutes up to 60 minutes in 20-minute increments. Our model is white. I don’t know if it comes in any other colors. A pedestal drawer can be purchased separately which is placed under the dryer. This both adds storage space and raises the dryer to a higher level so loading and unloading doesn’t require as much bending. Experience: We’ve had this machine for over a year now, and it has performed flawlessly. At first, the number of features and options were a bit overwhelming. We quickly learned, though, that for basic drying, it was very easy to set. Just turn the power on, set the cycle selector to normal, and push it in. For the control freak, however, this dryer has plenty to offer, as you can tell from the description above.
We use the sensor dry function most of the time, but vary the dryness level depending on the type of load. For example, we set it to More Dry when we are drying a load of towels. Drying times are much shorter than with our old dryer, even taking into consideration the new washer spins more water out. It is also quieter than our old dryer was, and it seems to be easier on clothes, at least according to my wife. I can’t tell that it is easier on clothes, but I have noticed that they come out less wrinkled than with our old dryer.
We have used the drying rack a couple of times and it worked nicely. It isn’t something we have a need for often, but it’s nice to have when you do need it. I dried a pair of athletic shoes using it and my wife has dried delicate items.
There are times when a load of clothes will finish and, in spite of the loud beeper, we get distracted and forget to unload them. That’s where the Freshen Up manual cycle comes in handy. This is one of the manual cycles and can be set to a specific time. It doesn’t always take all of the wrinkles out, but it sure helps. Final Thoughts: We’ve used this dryer almost daily for over a year and have had no trouble with it. It has performed better than we expected and is easy to operate, in spite of a large number of options and settings. It is quiet and efficient, and handles large loads well. I can’t think of one negative thing to say about it. I would buy this dryer again, and highly recommend it.
