| tean94's Full Review: LG VX10000 (8 GB) Cell Phone |
My wife and I have been a Verizon Wireless customer for nearly 5 years now. One of their best benefits is the "New Every 2" program, where after 2 years you can get a discount on a new phone. This is what I did over a year ago when I bought the LG Voyager. I've really enjoyed this phone for the year that I've owned it.
Features: QWERTY Keyboard - I have fairly large hands and fingers. This keyboard is perfect for me. The keys are well spaced and raised. I do wish the spacebar key was in the middle, but that is a very minor issue for me.
External Touch Screen - When I showed my phone to a co-worker who has an iPhone, he immediately noticed and commented on the tactile feedback that the phone gives you when you touch the screen. I really like that you have a few different options on how strong the vibration is when the screen is touched, or even to turn it off if you prefer. However, I really like the vibration. You can scroll through your Contact List, Menus and even Fast-Forward or Reverse Music with the flick of a finger. After you run the touch orientation, the touch screen is very accurate. You can also lock the Touch Screen either by the manual lock toggle on the side of the phone or by pressing the lock icon or by choosing it to auto-lock in the menu options.
Large Display Screens External & Internal - The screens are 2.81 inches and supports 262,000 colors in a 400x240 pixel resolution. I've watched a few full length movies on these screens. Excellent quality! You can also use the External Screen as a ViewFinder when using the 2.0 Megapixel Camera. I have different wallpapers on each screen, which I like. There are also LG Voyager websites that provide wallpapers that are premade to fit these screens.
Stereo Speakers - These speakers are on either side of the Internal Display and are Loud and Clear! I've loaded my 4 Gig Memory Card with Music and Movies. Both sound great whether the phone is opened or not, but obviously is louder when the phone is opened.
Call Clarity - I've never dropped a call with this phone. However, I did with my previous phone once in a while. The Bluetooth headset I use also works great with this phone. My biggest complaint is that if the phone is turned up too loud, the internal speaker earpiece will distort during a normal toned conversation. I just keep my volume down lower.
2.0 Megapixel Camera/Videocamera - This camera is great! There are a ton of features that you would normally find in a digital camera. The pictures turn out very clear and are even editable while on the camera. You can also choose to record video as well and the video looks as good as you would imagine it would from a cell phone. I agree that an external light would have been nice, but not a major issue for me. I don't do a lot of night time bird watching anyways.
Memory - The LG Voyager has a MicroSD card slot on the side of the phone which makes it easy to access and also supports memory cards up to 8 GB. That's quite a bit of music, pics and movies that can be stored. The Voyagers internal memory is 180 MB.
Internet - The internet is very fast with Verizon's 3G technology. You can make internet pages fit the screen or you can zoom in on the page. Also, the internet looks like you would expect from accessing it from a PC. There is no Wi-Fi capability, which I wish I had the option because I personally don't like paying for internet over my phone.
V Cast Features - Mobile TV is offered on the LG Voyager for an additional fee. There is even an extendable TV antenna in the phone to improve reception. I personally have not used this feature, but from friends that have, they say the video is quite good and smooth. The phone has GPS built in and loaded with VZ Navigator. Again, I've not used this feature either as I don't want to pay for the fee and I don't travel much. However, I do like knowing that I have the option to use it if I were on a business trip or family vacation.
Battery - I actually bought the Extended Battery which sticks out slightly on the back of the phone, but I get a full 8 hours of full battery life with it. However, if I use my bluetooth headset, the battery life decreases. I typically charge my phone every night based on a Verizon Customer Rep's advice. As she put it, "It's better to have a full charge every morning, because then you don't have to worry about your battery dying during the day."
Conclussion: As I stated earlier, I've been using this phone for over a year and I've really enjoyed it. Some people are turned off by it because it is a bit bulky and heavy, but I like to think it means it is well constructed. I've dropped my phone a few times on the ground and it's still working perfectly.
I also personally love the ability to flip the phone open and use the QWERTY keyboard when texting. You can also use the traditional 9-key touch pad on the External Touch Screen for texting if you so prefer.
Get It Now is nice to search for Games, Music, and Pictures through Verizon, however, I don't like that you get nickle and dimed for Megabyte usage depending on your current plan.
You can also add your own ringtones by using BitPim and a USB cable.
I do wish the headphone jack was a standard size, but it requires a 2.5mm plug. This means you have to buy some sort of adapter if you're going to use a normal 3.5mm headphone.
If you are in the market for a new phone, then might I suggest the LG Voyager! It has tons of great features, easy to use Menus and is very customizable.
