Energy/water efficient & gets clothes cleaner too

We bought our LG2010 front loader in July 09 to replace a 9+ year old Maytag supercapacity top loader that was a real water hog. We live in the country so our main concern was minimizing water drainage into our septic system. A super load on the Maytag took 45 gals on water ... the LG takes only 16 (measured on the digital meter in our water softner) !!! The LG is very easy to use and gets the clothes clean all the time. Besides saving on waste water drained, it of course saves on water used which saves on electicity (it is rated for only $12/year electricity, hard to believe), water heating costs, even less soft water which saves on salt and more water drained via the salt recharge cycle.
Also we have had no washer vibration problems with the unit on the main floor of the house over a full basement, on ceramic tile - we never have used the extra high spin speed since regular spins gets almost all water out of the clothes saving on drying time/electricity also. We bought the companion dryer as well on a "must by both for $1000" special on a new dealer in town, ie the washer washer only $500 despite a normal $650 sale price. We also received dealer and electic company rebates and were able to sell our older still working units so it really only cost us around $800 total both washer and dryer even with sales tax in the total.
The benefits are mostly listed above but again PROS are
- Clothes get clean, never a problem in 3 months usage - Quieter than our top loader, even with laundry room door open - Energy efficient, incredibly low water usage - Quality on LG rated high by consumer reports, JD Powers (I hope so, we'll see after 5-10 years)
CONS - Only reason Ease of Use rated low but the doors of ALL front loaders swing backwards for most standard US installations. A front loader washer should be on the left side the way the unadjustable doors swing, but every house we've had (6) in 34 years had the top loader washers on the right. You can adjust them but then need to drill a new dryer vent hold through the floor if you want the dryer on the right said ... argh! Of course you need to bend more and spending $200 each on pedestals when the washer only cost $500 was crazy.
- Long cycles. Average medium wash takes 42 mins, large with no prerinse 55 mins. Not a big deal but be ready. It also makes 'strange noises' churning back and forth to weigh load etc but that is normal (and not loud).
- We have had no problems but many read this about have on all top loader brands - KEEP THE DOOR slightly OPEN to air dry it out and prevent any mildew buildup and smell.
