gatorgirlie's Full Review: Lush Big Blue Bath Bomb
One of my last trips to Lush was a few months ago and I knew I wasn't going to be able to get back to a store in some time... so I stocked up (of course). I bought stuff I like and I bought a TON of stuff I hadn't tried yet. One of those that fit into the "haven't tried yet" category was Big Blue, one of Lush's large bath bombs.
So, what is this exactly?
Essentially this is a large, round, blue and white streaked ball with bits of seaweed inside of it. It is 6.3 oz in size and costs around $5.40. This is one of Lush's famous bath bombs... and if you're not familiar with Lush, it's a natural company who prides itself on using only the best natural ingredients and safe synthetics in their bath and body care products. You can find a few stores scattered around the country or you can order from their online store, located at http://www.lushusa.com.
Anyway, back to Big Blue... It's got a nice, oceany (best way to describe it) smell in solid form. Lush's website claims it's "lavender and lemon," but I say it just smells clean and crisp... like sea water should smell. The sea salt (Atlantic sea salt to be precise) adds to the salty sea tang and improves the feel of the solid ball in your hands. I have been eyeing this bath bomb for quite some time because of the clean smell -- I'm usually not a huge fan of scents like this (I'm more of a sweet-note kind of girl), but it was intriguing.
Hmmmmm.... Clean-up on Aisle Bathtub!
So, I get home and it sits (wrapped in its bag) for a few weeks. One thing I've noticed about Lush stuff is that they do lose their scent over time, but the few weeks it sat on my shelf didn't really make that much of a difference. It still smelled salty and cool, though a bit diluted. The way bath bombs work is that you're supposed to throw it under running water and let the entire thing dissolve, which it does quickly.
The water immediately turns a beautiful blue color, which seems to me to be very calming... and it emits a nice salty note... almost exactly like you're going into the sea. There are these moderately sized black things floating around in the water which must be the seaweed Lush talks about. The only thing that disconcerts me is that there were SO many of them -- my whole bath tub was filled with floating black strings! Kind of gross, if you ask me (especially since I'm the kind of gal who doesn't go in the ocean if there's a lot of seaweed floating about). I get in and the first thing I notice is that the smell is kind of gone... I can still detect the lavender and lemon, but the majority of the smell I can sense is salt (though the longer I sat in the bath, the more prominent the seaweed smell got). That doesn't bother me and I proceed to float in blissful oblivion for a good forty minutes.
I'm not sure if it was just me, or if it really did work... but it seemed the combination of the salt and seaweed really did soften my skin. Not a lot, mind you... but rather more than Lush's other traditional bath bombs (not as much as a few Butterballs, but that's another review).
When it came time to pull the plug (regrettably), I noticed the entire tub of blue water went down the drain with nary a stain on my bathtub. Fantastic. I did, however, notice with dismay that the seaweed refused to go down as well. Not so fantastic. I had to scoop the seaweed out, which was a little gross simply because the seaweed has a slimy texture to it after forty minutes in a bathtub. I have heard that people will slip this bomb into a nylon stocking before dropping it into their tub -- that's a great idea, one that I'll be using next time I purchase this one.
Overall
Beautiful blue color... Relaxing and calming scent... Very little clean-up necessary... Moisturizes my skin... what's not to like about this bath bomb. I'm not saying it's taking a place up among my favorites (Youki-Hi), but it's still one of Lush's better bath bombs. I'm not the biggest fan of their bombs simply because they don't seem to accomplish as much as their bubble bars or melts -- mostly they just sit there and look pretty -- but this one is different.
If you're looking for a relaxing and enjoyable bath treat, check out Lush's Big Blue bath bomb. I give it a hearty Four Stars (one star knocked off because of the gross seaweed floating around and the fact that the scent disappears quickly) and a Check it out on the recommendation!
