| jeavinl's Full Review: Lush Brazened Honey Fresh Face Mask |
Its been a few weeks since I gave my face a good scrub. Thats not to say I havent washed it, but I havent treated myself to a facial mask in a while. So I decided to try out the Brazened Honey Face Mask I picked up recently at Lush. My skins been a little sun burned and a little temperamental lately, so I wanted something soothing yet effective.
The basics
Brazened Honey is a BioFresh facial mask created by Lush, a store devoted to creating handmade cosmetics and bath products with fresh, natural ingredients. Their BioFresh masks come packaged in little plastic containers that hold at least 5 masks worth of product. They require refrigeration and can stay fresh for about a month (they have an expiration date on them). Because they are so fresh, these are only sold in store locations and not online. Lush describes Brazened Honey as having an herbal honey scent and is meant to refresh and detoxify tired skin. It contains scrubby almond shells, soothing honey, rejuvenating rosemary, kaolin clay to smooth lines, and a host of Indian spices.
Ingredients
Kaolin, talc, fresh lime juice, sage, rosemary and juniperberry infusion, fresh free range eggs, honey, glycerine, fresh fennel, ground almond shells, almond oil, bentonite gel, fresh ginger root, fresh parsley, fresh coriander, ground tumeric, ground cardamom, clove bud oil, ginger oil, vetivert oil, juniperberry oil, benzyl salicylate, eugenol, geraniol, benzyl benzoate, linalool, perfume.
My thoughts
This stuff is yellow with a capital Y. My kids got a kick out of seeing mom with a yellow face and it was a workout keeping my infants hands away from my face for the 10-15 minutes I left the mask on. I worried about scrubbing it off since I remember an episode years ago when I accidentally spilled some turmeric (a yellow, staining Indian spice included in this mask) and had a terrible time removing it from my kitchen counter.
Putting it on was pretty easy. These BioFresh masks require refrigeration so they do feel cool on the skin. This particular one was a little smoother to apply than the Catastrophe one I tried a few months ago but a little chunkier than Cupcake. Still, it went on fine with a few little flakes falling into the sink. It is a little thick and somewhat clumps as it dries, but its not excessive and I wasnt shedding the mask all over the house. It dried firm but not that too-tight-to-smile clay feeling some masks leave behind.
To me, this mask smells a little minty yet sweet. I smell the ginger, the honey, and the almond, and perhaps a bit of the rosemary. Its pleasant. Although I love Indian food and was drawn to this mask because of the Indian spices in it, I was relieved that I wouldnt end up smelling like some chana masala.
I was worried about washing off a yellow mask after the disaster zone the brown Cupcake one created in my sink and on my face. But Brazened Honey washed off relatively easy. It took me a couple minutes to make sure all the yellow was off, but it ran down my drain without a problem and didnt leave any residue on my skin or on my towel. What a relief!
The results are nice. My skin is smooth and soft to touch. It has a nice healthy glow to it, too. My pores look a little more refined and less noticeable. My face feels cleaner and a lot less greasy without feeling overly dry. The almond bits are scrubby and a little rough but they didn't scratch my often-sensitive skin or leave my face red and irritated. Brazened Honey is not as impressive as Catastrophe was on my skin, but I do like this mask and will happily use it again.
The second time I used it, I did notice some sneezing and a little redness on my neck afterward so those with allergies may want to try a sample first. I didnt experience sneezing or redness the first time, so its possible my reaction is more due to seasonal allergies than the mask itself. But it should be noted, that this mask contains eggs.
Overall impression
My skin looks and feels clean and healthy after using this fresh, handmade mask. Its full of good-for-me ingredients, left my skin glowing, and didnt create a mess when applying or removing. Four stars.
