njchicaa's Full Review: Lush Demon In the Dark Soap
One of the best parts of opening up a box containing your latest LUSH order is discovering which two product samples they included in the box. Demon In The Dark was one of the samples I received in my very first order. I left it sitting in its plastic wrapper on a shelf in my bathroom closet for a couple of months because, frankly, it looked scary. Eventually my curiosity got the best of me and I decided to try out this soap. It's not a favorite of mine but those who enjoy cloves might really enjoy this product.
What Is Demon In The Dark?
According to LUSH, this is an "apple juice and mint" and mint soap designed to refresh and revive you if you are tired. It has this strange layer of black wax on top of it that you need to peel off prior to use. I have absolutely no idea what the purpose of the wax is. The soap is a lovely dark green with lighter-colored swirls scattered throughout. In addition to the apple juice and mint infusion, Demon In The Dark also contains spearmint oil, peppermint oil, clove bud oil, and gardenia extract. LUSH sells a 3.5 ounce bar of this soap for $7.50 which makes it one of the most expensive soaps that they sell.
Showering With The Demon
This soap, like most LUSH soaps, produces enough lather to wash and shave with but not copious amounts of foam and bubbles. It is cleans well and rinses off cleanly without stripping skin of moisture. The small sliver of soap that I used each morning received lasted me almost two weeks. I was really impressed with how much use I got out of this soap. A full-sized bar would probably last months.
The one problem I did have with Demon In The Dark was the fragrance. If the picture of the soap wasn't so scary, a description of "apples and mint" would have enticed me to purchase it. Unfortunately, the piece that I received did not smell at all like what I was expecting. I detected the mint ingredients but I can't say that I ever did notice the apple juice. I couldn't put my finger on the fragrance at first and came up with "toothpaste" after several uses. Eventually I realized what was upsetting me: the clove bud oil. I don't like clove scents and it is very prominent in this soap. Luckily, the fragrance doesn't linger on skin after your shower so I was able to use up my entire sample sliver of Demon In The Dark.
**Note: LUSH products are handmade in small batches by their employees each week. As a result, their products tend to be inconsistent. My sliver of this soap had a very strong clove component but it may very well be milder in other batches. Just something to keep in mind.**
Overall Opinion
For the most part, Demon In The Dark is a great product. It does a great job of cleaning skin without drying it out and a bar will last for a reeeeeeeeeally long time. I don't like clove-scented items so this soap isn't for me, but those who do will probably love Demon In The Dark.
