42ENGLISH's Full Review: L'Oréal L'Oreal Feria Hair Color Power Reds R...
My hair is a mousy brown color with a touch of gray. Exciting, huh? That is why I have colored my hair almost all my life. I used to use semi-permanent color but as the little gray hairs come in, I am finding that I have to use a permanent color for better coverage. Blonds just don't suit my features and anything close to black makes me look like Morticia Adams, especially in the winter when my tan fades. So I have always leaned toward dark auburns. I am partial to L'Oreal products and when I found the L'Oreal Feria Power Reds, Burgundy, I thought I would give it a try.
In the box:
1 bottle colorant gel , 1 applicator bottle of developer, vial of colour booster concentrate, nutri protective conditioner, professional gloves
Booster: Aqua/Water, Basic Red 51, Basic Yellow 87, F.I.L. #D8298/1. (May be covered under the following U.S. Patents, when used in combination with Feria Developer and Feria Power Reds Colorant.)
I am cutting off the ingredients here. There are more for the conditioner but why waste space. It's obvious we are dealing with a lot of chemicals here. Because most hair color consists of so many chemicals, it's best to do an allergy test before using it. I usually do it on the back of my hand. I, personally, have never had a reaction to any hair color products but there is always a first time.
This product cautions you not to use it on relaxed hair or over compound henna or progressive color. Also not to use on eyelashes or eyebrows as it could cause blindness.
My Experience:
I have always had to have someone else color my hair, I just can't seem to get the back covered evenly so my daughter did it this time. As she was mixing the color gel, developer and booster, I noticed that pungent ammonia odor was really strong, in fact, enough to make my eyes water. This is a gel colorant and when mixed is kind of runny so make sure your floor is protected because it will stain and it also stains the skin. As careful as she was not get this mixture on my forehead and neck, it ran out of my hair by my ears and straight down my neck and believe me it took a couple of days for my scrubbed skin to fade.
My hair is shoulder-length and there was plenty of product left so if you have long hair, one box should be enough. I had my daughter use a professional color brush to apply the product. I find that you get total coverage with them if you part your hair into six sections and apply the color evenly.
After thirty minutes, I headed for the shower to quickly rinse and condition. However, the color was difficult to rinse out and I couldn't get the water to run clear. More color came out when I rinsed out the conditioner but it still wasn't clear. I needn't have worried. After drying my hair, the color was obvious. It was a lighter shade than I had wanted and was very blunt and flat, no highlights here at all though. It had also stained my scalp right at the parting and that didn't look too great. The stench of ammonia stayed with me for a week after the feat but I figured after a couple of washings the color might look more natural.
Unfortunately, it never did. The color was so flat and blunt with no shine to it, it had an unnatural look to it. Usually, my hair feels healthy and bouncy after the deep conditioning included in coloring hair. Subsequent washings washed out the color and it faded to a practical carrot color. It was horrible and eventually, I re-colored my hair successfully with a different product.
Conclusion:
I was extremely disappointed with L'Oreal Feria Power Reds, Burgundy. It stunk to high heaven, the color was far from natural and eventually it faded to orange. I was surprised that a L'Oreal product would be so disappointing as I have always thought them superior to most. However, this product was a dud for me in more ways than one, more so than any other colorant I have ever used.
