xxskagirlxx's Full Review: L'Oréal Loreal Feria Power Reds Hair Color No...
I've been dying my hair since high school (so for almost 10 years), and mostly have stuck within the red family of things. I usually use at home hair dyes from either the drugstore or Sally Beauty, depending on how impulsive I'm feeling. In the summer time I usually have my stylist throw in some highlights, just to break things up.
So I was faced with outgrown highlights and faded red lowlights when I decided it was time to go back to red. I usually use L'oreal Excellence, but the red shade I had been using was more auburn. I was feeling fiery and wanted something rich. Faced with an overwhelming assortment of choices at Walgreens, I decided to go with Feria Ruby Rush, which was on sale for $6.99.
What Feria claims:

What I found:
Enclosed in the box was the typical color dye and developing lotion. Feria also encloses a pack of scented oil and a tube of conditioner. There were two other items enclosed that I wasn't familiar with: A tube of red color booster and a packet of moisturizing shampoo to use along with the conditioner.
Application was typical: I poured the dye into the developing lotion and added the scented oil. I also added the red color booster. There were warnings all over about being careful with it an they were right- it was akin to pouring in a large tube of red food dye. I then shook it all up and proceeded to apply carefully.
Unfortunately, it seemed as though my minute of shaking hadn't totally mixed everything up and the first thing that came out of the application bottle was a stream of the red color booster. It trickled down my forehead and I looked like I had been shot in the head. Warning: it stains.
I shook the bottle for another minute and then resumed application. The formula was definitely a lot more runny than what I'm used to with Excellence.
I found that the formula didn't really irritate my scalp (no tingling) but the smell was typical hair dye smell, even with the scent oil added.
As I was applying, I was mildly concerned that the dye seemed to be pure red with no hint of brown. I was feeling adventurous, though, and kept going.
After allowing the dye to develop for 25 minutes, it was time to rinse out.
The instructions of the shampoo packet stated to use and rinse twice, then follow with conditioner. I couldn't believe the amount of red that came out of my hair. My shower curtain liner was stained pink, which has never happened before.
After rinsing, shampooing, and conditioning, I stepped out and glanced at myself in the mirror. Holy red hair. My hair was pure red, just as promised on the box. There was nary a brown or auburn undertone to be scene. On the plus side: it didn't have a purple undertone, which I feared. It was just pure straight red.
After drying and styling, I decided I liked it. I kind of looked like a super hero.
Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be.
For the next week I washed my hair carefully with color safe shampoo and every day more and more pink dye came out and the red faded away. Seven days after I had dyed my hair I was styling it and realized that I could actually see blonde. My highlights were coming back through! That's never happened before, especially with a permanent dye like Feria is supposed to be.
So in one week I had gone from a fiery red to a light auburn with blonde highlights. Even my mom (who I was vacationing with) commented that my hair color had completely changed over the course of a week. Two days later, I went into Sally Beauty, which I should have done from the beginning, and picked up a tube of Wella dye, which I know will last.
The Bottom Line Delivers a fiery red as promised for the first two days, then washes out at an alarming rate. I know that red fades quickly, but I've never really had that problem. I couldn't believe how quickly it disappeared! Application was messy. I just wouldn't recommend.
