Pros: Tastes like ordinary milk, lasts longer than ordinary milk
Cons: More expensive than ordinary milk!
Life before Lactaid Milk
I missed drinking milk so much until I discovered Lactaid Milk. Before that, I only had Silk. But that does not taste like milk - or rather my mind tells me it is not 'real milk'!
What it is
Lactaid Milk is a God Send. Okay what it really is is a lactase enzyme-added milk, which can be taken by anyone who is lactose intolerant. Being lactose intolerant would mean that any time you have any milk-containing products, you end up with bloating, discomfort and sometimes even diarrhea. :( Well....not anymore...with Lactaid you can drink milk again!
It contains lactase enzyme - a natural product that your body produces to digest milk sugars. It breaks down the lactose in the milk! Yay! :-)
These milks come in usually the 2quart cardboard cartons, and depending on what kind you choose, the color varies. There is also a 3quart size that I seem to see only at Market Basket. These come in white opaque plastic containers that are very convenient. These come in all varieties too, but Market Basket usually always stocks Whole Milk, and the others not so much.
Fat-free, Low-fat, Reduced-fat, Whole milk, Calcium-fortified
Types I have tried
Whole milk, Calcium-fortified
Types I like
Both! They are both equally good to taste. The only difference is you get more calcium with the Calcium-fortified variety [ 50% of the daily value of calcium].
How long have I used it
Almost 4years now.
Directions for use
Use it like you would ordinary everyday milk - plain, in coffee/tea, whatever.
You can make any of your favorite milk shakes or desserts or whatever else with this too. You can use it in any recipe that requires milk in it.
For the Calcium-fortified, you need to shake the carton well before pouring lest the added calcium settles on the bottom.
This costs me about $3.99 for a 3Quart container at Market Basket. I have not seen this size at any other store.
At Stop & Shop, I get a 2Quart size carton for $3.19, or more sometimes.
Try their website for dollar off coupons or check coupon sites. Lactaid usually has at least 50c coupons somewhere. My Market Basket does not accept internet printed coupons, so this is of limited use! :( Stop and Shop accepts internet coupons far as I know.
What I like about it
-Lasts much longer than ordinary milk - about 2 weeks longer on average [refrigerated, of course].
-Tastes as good as ordinary milk.
Lactaid Milk has let me really enjoy milk again. I know I sound like a commercial, but it is the truth. I can now eat my cereal with milk, have my coffee with milk, drink some lovely cold milk, and never worry about the side-effects of that dreaded lactose!
You can also try Lactaid Fast Act Lactase Enzyme Supplement Caplets. Check out my review on this at:
