Well! I am back my friends after a long time. I was actually a little busy with my practice. Couldn't find time but couldn't resist posting a review on LACTAID MILK.
I think before going in to the benefits of this product, its wise for us to know where it is exactly useful and how it works.
I prescribe Lactaid Milk to my patients who come with Lactose intolerance and it had shown excellent results.
Milk is a necessity for everyone of us and is the cheapest and best nutrient and an almost complete food after egg.
It is not good to avoid milk especially in growing children because milk protein provides the building blocks.
But milk along with protien also contains Lactose, the milk carbohydrate.
Here comes the problem. Patients with Lactose intolerance can develop severe diarrhea which if uncontrolled leads to dehydration and finally death.
Lactose is digested by a brush border enzyme in our intestine called Lactase. Children deficient in Lactase accumulate lactose in their intestines even after a breast feed {Mothers milk contains high lactose].
Lactose when accumulates in the gut rises the osmotic pressure in the gut lumen and draws the water from the blood in to the gut leading to what is called Osmotic purgation charecterized by a watery diarrhea.
This can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and death.
The only alternative in such kids is to avoid milk. This can hinder growth if essential nutrients are not supplied in early age.
Now comes Lactaid milk. It is 100% free of Lactose and contains most of the nutrients present in mothers milk.
It also contains lactase enzyme which permits the infant to have one or two feeds of natural milk also.
Lactaid is also fortified with calcium one of the essential mineral for bone building...especially in growing children
I would be more happy if it were fortified with VitaminD3 also because calcium alone cannot enter the body because it needs D3 for its absorption. When fortified with D3 it could serve an additional advantage in prevention of rickets and in case of elderly with chronic renal failure
Half a gallon of lactaid milk costs about $4
Indications: Particularly for infants with Lactose intolerance-do not use it unnecessarily because there is no substitute for mothers milk in infants.
Can be used in the elderly and debilitated patients
