Lakewood Window Fan - nicest window fan I've used but with some useless features

Pros:Privacy-screen; Good speed settings; thermostat; Easily reversible; May blow in & out simultaneously; Easy installation.
Cons:Digital controls, not manual; thermostat doesn't go low enough; other digital features not too useful.
The Bottom Line: It costs about $10 more than the average window-mounted fans, but it's worth it for the (limited usefulness) thermostat, privacy screens, blowing direction versatility and easy mounting and removal.
This fan is available in Wal-Mart for about $30 as their top-of-the-line window-mounted fan. It has digital push-button controls, which can be a bad thing because I've had them fail in other appliances. However I find that they are easy to use and work well. It is very easy to remove and re-install whenever you want to close the window, and you can leave it plugged in. A double-hung window can close in on a slot on the top of this fan, and as long as it's not too thick it holds it in place nicely.

Instead of conventional fan blades, it has two "fan mills" similar to a water wheel (or a hamster treadmill with lots of blades) with a black privacy screen on one side of the treadmill. Lakewood markets this on the box as something that increases privacy because it prevents people from seeing through the fan. It does as promised, you can't see through the fan and light won't go through, and it seems to deliver a nice, steady breeze, not a choppy breeze delivered by the conventional fan design.
The fan's two treadmills can be reversed internally without having to take out the fan. It actually physically flips the treadmill over, reversing the direction that it blows. Each treadmill can even go in opposite directions, one in and one out, but I have not used that setting because I find that a cross-breeze achieved by opening a window on another wall works so much better. If your room only has one window though, this might be a desirable feature because it provides better ventilation than one window blowing air in or out with no other windows open.
It has three discrete speeds. The bottom speed is nice and quiet and delivers a light breeze, while the top speed delivers quite a powerful breeze that can cool a room quickly.
It has a digital thermostat at 5 preset temperatures from low to high, a feature most window-mounted fans don't have. It does a good job at turning the fan on and off frequently when needed and keeping the room at a constant temperature, but I find that the temperature settings are too high and only the lowest one keeps the room at a tolerable temperature, through somewhat too high. The thermostat is good for leaving on days when you're not home to keep the room from getting stuffy, but when you're actually in the room or sleeping you may want to use the manual control with no thermostat because the lowest setting won't get the room cool enough. I would advise Lakewood to use lower thermostat settings to improve this product.
Other digital features are less-than-useful: it has a "normal," "natural" and "sleep" mode feature. The "natural" and "sleep" features vary the fan speed in strange, nonsensical ways that are clearly distracting. Varying the fan speed often might be okay if it varies gradually, but this fan only has three discrete speeds and I find it's quite distracting, especially during sleep, so I find the feature useless and only use the "normal" mode.
It has a timer for up to 12 hours, something I can't say I've ever used.
Overall I like the way the fan works, but some of the digital settings could have used more though and fine-tuning.
