Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros:No skipping or splatting, fine tipped rollerball, green or black refills, clips to many things
Cons:Too lightweight for me, green ink not my style, clips gets in the way, pricey
The Bottom Line: The Lamy AL-Star Green Rollerball Pen - L324 is a unique aluminum green pen with green ink. It's very lightweight in the hand and writes smoothly. I prefer weightier pens.
Note: The actual name of this pen is the Lamy AL-Star Green Rollerball Pen - L324. It looks like two titles may have merged or the name changed over the years.

I am a pen collector. I love pens, especially unique or pricey ones. I still write in journals (with a pen, not a computer keyboard) and a nice weighty pen that doesn't skip is a joy to use. I was given the Lamy AL-Star Green Rollerball Pen - L324 as a gift from a friend who is like minded. She has the same pen fetish I do and loved this one. I like it but green ink isn't my style. Luckily, I can swap the rollerball refill for black ink. I also am not a fan of how very lightweight this pen is.
About this Pen
The Lamy AL-Star Green Rollerball Pen - L324 is made from lightweight aluminum. The outside is oxidized green metallic. The green is a lighter shade of green, very shiny and eye catching. The matching cap pulls off and there is a chrome chip to attach the pen to whatever you want (within reason). The pen is a rollerball type and uses M63 rollerball refills. The rollerball tip is quite fine. It rolls along the page nicely and doesn't skip or splat. The color of the ink is dark green but you can always swap that out for black ink.
The Lamy AL-Star Green Rollerball Pen - L324 is stunning to look at. It's expensive looking and the color is unisex. I didn't know when I received the pen that it actually had green ink. That was a shock and not a good one. I don't often enjoy colored inks. (I make an expectation for purple.) This green ink is dark though and, with the fine point, is very readable and not child-like. I still didn't love it so I got a black refill. The black ink is dark, bold, and perfect for me.
The pen is lighter than I expected. It looks weighty but, in my hand, is very light. The top pulls off and can be replaced on the top of the pen to keep it from getting lost and to give the pen additional height. The problem is the large chrome clip gets in the way so I have to remove the cap to use the pen.
This pen writes smoothly and evenly without any skipping or ink splats. The ink dries quickly (both the green and black). But it is so lightweight that I find myself a bit annoyed when I use it. Most people would love a very lightweight pen but I like the feel of a substantial pen in my hand when I write. That may sound crazy considering how sore my hand can get after writing a lot with a heavier pen but there's just something about a nice, weighty pen that does it for me.
The Lamy AL-Star Green Rollerball Pen - L324 is not at all weighty. It is extremely lightweight to the point of even feeling a bit cheap in my hand. Although I do like how smooth the thin rollerball glides across the page and the neatness of the ink, this is far from a favorite pen of mine. It's definitely better quality than typical drugstore brands but the green ink combined with the bothersome chrome clip and the featherweight barrel all go against it. Adding to my cons list is the fact that I really don't like the color green - ink or otherwise. This green is definitely eye catching and pretty but I never was a big fan of the color.
Having said all of that, the pen is made well and ink refills last for ages. The ink doesn't skip and bleed through the page. The fine tip makes writing look crisp and clean.
You can purchase the Lamy AL-Star Green Rollerball Pen - L324 on the Lamy website or at Amazon through their affiliates. The price I have seen is about $32.00-$37.00 which shocked me. This pen feels like a $20.00 or under pen although it writes like a fine instrument. The pen is cheaper at a few outlets so I suggest comparing prices to get the best deal.
I appreciate that this pen was a gift to me by a fellow writer, however, I wouldn't buy it for myself. Green is not a color I favor and certainly not in ink. Still, I do have the black refill which is better. The pen is very light which many people will love because it doesn't strain the hand. It has a chrome clip that opens quite wide to attach to even thick things like hardcover journals. The fine rollerball tip gives a clean overall look. But I prefer weightier pens with a little more substance. I give this pen 3 stars based on my preference. If you like lightweight pens and favor the color green, you will love this one.
