Pros:Soothing aloe moisturizer; does not contain lanolin
Cons:more money than generic cortisone cream
The Bottom Line: Provides considerable relief in quick time to rashes on sensitive skin
Just recently I read some reviews on Lanacane and thought I would check the ingredients listed on the box as well as the price the next time I cruised through Rite Aid. I was surprised to see the Maximum Strength version selling at $5.69 with lanolin as one of the first ingredients. I am allergic to lanolin and could not possibly make that purchase.

I have many tubes of prescribed steroid ointments from my Dermatologist, but when summer hits, the rays of the sun while I am driving do real damage to my forehead and the rest of my face. For this reason I always have on hand a tube of generic cortisone cream. Whether this is the drug store brand or the grocery store they always sell for $3.99. Well I saw this natural homeopathic cream, Florasone for $5.99 and consulted with the Pharmacist who thought it was worth trying. They are well aware of my skin irritations and wanted me to try this and let them know how it worked. It kind of burned and smelled very strange so the following week when I arrived to the laundromat that felt like an oven at 8am I headed over the parking lot for another product.
This time I spotted the Lanacane Anti-Itch Crème noting no lanolin listed with the cost being $4.99. I needed relief quick and wanted to stock up so I also picked up a tube of Aveeno for $5.99. After requesting the management of the laundry facility to turn on the fans I moved my location closer to the door and started placing the cream on my forehead. What relief that was and who cared if I had a white forehead! The texture is a bit different from the generic brands and other major brands of cortisone creams I have used. Out of the three tubes I have purchased of these brands the Lanacane Anti-Itch Crème is almost gone, while the others are still close to full.
For some reason all these years I had assumed Lanacane contained lanolin due to the similar names, but glad to know the regular Lanacane Anti-Itch Crème is a product I can now use and will continue to purchase regularly. I will continue to use my prescribed ointments nightly and once during the day. When I am in the midst of a heat rash, irritation to my face or hands, and the itching is constant, I will reach for my tube of the Lanacane Anti-Itch Crème .
The texture is more coarse than creamy but is white and has a pleasant smell that lingers but is more of a perfume scent than one that reeks of medicine. The first day last week that I used the Lanacane Anti-Itch Crème I must have applied it like five times along with other stuff in between. I decided to read the directions and realized this was to be applied between one to three times a day. The next morning when I awoke my face was swollen and I thought about heading to the Emergency Room for a shot of cortisone. I refrained from driving and kept my hair off my forehead and applied the recommended times and kept windows and air constantly on myself. Over the course of three days my rash was gone, mainly in part to the applications of the Lanacane Anti-Itch Crème .
The box the Lanacane Anti-Itch Crème comes in did not mention eczema as a symptom this would relieve, although I now feel they should include this to help other sufferers who might have overlooked this product as well. This is marketed for the relief of:
Dry, itchy skin
Irritated, sensitive skin
So by reading the recommendations it does seem like allergic itch and heat rash are close to what I used this for on my sensitive skin. Included in the one ounce tub that is yellow is an anti-bacterial that acts as a germ-killer and prevents infection. It just so happens that the Lanacane Anti-Itch Crème was initially developed by a Dermatologist and is steroid-free and antihistamine-free. I had also noticed on my face the next day a blister that resembled the Impetigo my son had the week before so I took some antibiotics I had for about five days to stop the spread of that rash.
Lanacane Anti-Itch Crème is suitable for children over the age of two with the affected area cleansed before applying. The warnings mention not to apply over large areas so I did not use this on my legs and stuck to my steroid ointment. I was very careful when applying on my face around the eye area as should be done to avoid contact. If you have deep wounds, animal bites or burns this should not be utilized.
The added relief comes from the soothing vitamins E, A and D. The active ingredient is 6% of Benzocaine with the inactive ones consisting of Sulfated Castor Oil, Water, Zinc Oxide, Fragrance, Glycerin and others that are the vitamins. If the condition worsens stop using and consult a Doctor. If this could tackle my severe flare up of heat induced eczema in three days, that this would help any type of rash or itch.
There is no burning sensation when applied to my face or arms but the soothing relief with the itch gone within a few minutes. The only reason I had to keep applying the first day is due to the heat inside the laundry facility and no ventilation. When I got inside my hot car and the drive home it acted up again so I applied once I was indoors. This is indeed a product worth keeping in the car, handbag and medicine cabinet for when the need arises. I must apply to my face as the itch is there or it becomes unbearable so having the tube in my purse is a life saver that stops the itch quickly so I can go about the business of the day.
I would suggest trying the Lanacane Anti-Itch Crème before spending an additional $1.50 for the Maximum Strength unless you feel it is worth getting the lanolin too.
