tiasmom's Full Review: Lanacane Creme Maximum Strength 1oz
Since she was little my daughter has had problem skin. Over the years we have seen many dermatologists. It has improved over the years and now she only has the occasional problem, but she gets awful red bumpy rashes on much of her body from the neck down. It’s been described as everything from eczema to allergies and sensitive skin. The usually remedy has been an over the counter anti-itch cream, prescription steroid cream or oral antihistamine.
During an outbreak several months ago I decided to pick up an OTC remedy rather than take her to the doctor for the same advice. Actually I picked up another brand first but within a week or so decided to buy Lanacane Maximum Strength Anti-Itch Crème Medication. I chose it because it contains a maximum strength anti-bacterial ingredient. I figured that killing the germs she was spreading by her constant itching would end the rash sooner.
From the Lanacane website:
·Three times stronger to help stop itching and the urge to scratch, fast!
·Provides effective pain relief. Helps soothe skin irritated by painful itching
·Contains a maximum strength anti-bacterial to help kill germs and help prevent infection
·Enriched with therapeutic moisturizers to soothe irritated skin
About the itch/scratch cycle: The term used to describe how scratching an itch can lead to more itching and more scratching (and so on). Scratching actually causes injury to the skin and direct release of inflammatory mediators that enhance or cause itching themselves. There is a natural tendency for an itchy spot to enlarge, especially if it is scratched. The itch-scratch cycle can also lead to secondary infection, damage, thickening and scarring of the skin and a prolonged healing process.
Indications: Prompt temporary relief from pain and itching of sunburn, insect bites, poison ivy, and other irritated skin conditions. Helps prevent infection
They claim to be the only anti-itch crème that is also anti-bacterial.
Other Features
Lanacane Maximum Strength contains benzocaine, a topical anesthetic that anesthetizes the sensory nerve endings in skin. This stops the transmission of the nerve impulses to the brain that cause itch. It also contains aloe to cool and soothe. I have used it myself on itchy skin and it worked quickly and very effectively.
It’s steroid-free and antihistamine-free so there are no side effects. It is safe for children over the age of 2. Consult a doctor for kids that are younger. Moisturizers are added to keep dry skin from free of further irritation.
Directions: Adults and children 2 years of age and older: Clean the affected area. Apply to affected area not more than 1 to 3 times daily. Children under 2 years of age: consult a physician.
Lanacane comes in a 1 oz yellow tube. It resembles a small toothpaste tube and has a screw on cap. The lotion is white and has a slightly whipped consistency that resembles shaving cream. It's quickly absorbed and not at all greasy. There is a very faint scent that is fairly pleasant. It’s not medicinal but smells like a body lotion.
I paid $4.99 for the tube at Wal*Mart. It’s also available in all drugstores and in the medication aisles of most stores as well as online.
A More Recent Success
About a week ago my son began breaking out in small red oozing spots that were mostly on his arms. I knew it wasn’t chicken pox because he has been vaccinated. I searched online to see what else could be causing his skin condition and we discussed taking him to the doctor. Finally I guessed that he had been bitten by bugs while playing in his sandbox. He likes to lie down in it and the recent hot weather has brought out lots of insects.
Since he had been scratching and causing the rash to bleed I applied Lanacane to kill the germs. He stopped itching immediately and the next day the rash was dramatically improved. It cleared up completely in no time. I applied the lotion a total of 3 times over the course of several days.
We have had more luck with it than with most of the remedies we have tried over the years including many of the prescription creams. I hope the kids don’t have more skin problems anytime soon, but if they do I’ll reach for the Lanacane.
