when we bought our retirement home up in the mountains, we bought the one that the original owner had built a lush pool garden complete with every kind of colorful flower and citrus fruit tree imaginable, all surrounding the granite waterfall into the pool. While beautiful, the leaves were messing with the pool equipment!
Hayward Large Capacity Leaf Canister
At our local Leslies Swimming Pool Supplies store we were shown 2 sizes of leaf canisters. The small one retails for $54 with $5 off during their sales, or the large capacity leaf catcher for $90 with about $10 off during sales. Since there are about a hundred bushes, trees and plants surrounding our pool, we opted for the large capacity leaf canister.
The Hayward Large Capacity Leaf Canister is a very simple unit that is inserted in-line with your Kreepy or Barracuda pool vacuum systems. If you have a manual pool vacuum system, you can buy an adapter kit to make this work. For us, we inserted the leaf catcher after 1 hose segment from the where the hose goes to the intake. The canister only adds less than 2 to your overall hose length, so it wont disturb the balance you created when you set up your in-pool vacuum system.
Whats in the Box?
The unit consists of a lock ring, a lid, an o-ring, a permanent bag and the handled canister. Putting it all together doesnt require the one-page instruction paper that comes with it, but if you use the instructions, you can see that you couldve bought disposable bags to go in the permanent bag so you have an easier way to dispose of all the soggy leaves collected.
The unit goes together very easily and fits on the already in place hoses perfectly. After a 5 minute installation job, we turned on the pool vacuum system and leaves started rolling into the bag inside the clear Lexan canister.
Care and treatment of your leaf canister
The o-ring should be periodically lubed to prevent chemically drying out and cracking.
The permanent or disposable bags should be emptied out whenever you see it about half full because like a dryer filter, if it fills up, it will block the rest of the unit. We emptied the canister after the next day the first time we used it because we already had a huge leaf problem which is why we bought it. After that, once a week when the pool boy comes by it gets emptied.
Recommendation
This was not our first house with a pool with a leaf catcher, so we knew what a great and simple addition these are when landscaping doesnt take having a pool into consideration. We had a willow tree at our old house that filled that leaf catcher regularly. So, since this is a repeat purchase of a great solution and again it has met and exceeded our expectations, I can highly recommend this Hayward Large Capacity Leaf Canister.
One more additional note; we did have problems with the Kreepy hose sinking and then tangling in itself, This canister after one hose link held up the hose and stopped the drooping problem we had.
