Everything in my L-05 review applies here too but the L-05M adds a new dimension to this guitar with the solid Mahogany top.
Not only is this one of the most beautiful guitars I have ever owned but the sound is huge and warm. The notes are more bell like or piano like that the standard spruce top L-05.
This guitar has the general shape and measurements of a slope shoulder Gibson such as the J-45 but the shape is more rounded in the waist and upper bout. This gives it that comfortable feel which makes you think you are playing a smaller guitar when holding it.
The tone is astonishing and it records very well. The mahogany top is not quite as wildly resonant as a spruce top and this not only provides the warmer sound but also make this guitar perform with amazing results live on stage because of the reduced tendency to feedback. It also has the holy grail sound for blues fingerstyle and blues in general.
The string spacing and action on the neck are simply to die for. I have never owned a guitar of any brand with more precision craftsmanship and obvious quality. Just look at a few of my closeups in the photo gallery and you can see the quality that goes into these guitars.
I have played 4-5000.00 Goodall brand guitars lately that were no better than this guitar side by side. The maple wood binding and other features are something you will not get in a guitar less than 3000.00 much less the price these sell for on the street.
The truss rod adjustments are handled with a nifty wrench and the hard shell case is deluxe. See my other review for more details on the L-05 in general but these M models are only made once every year or so when Larrivee finds just the right availability of woods to make them. This is NOT your standard mahogany. It has a rich golden and amber finish with almost a red tint. The grain is amazing and the finish is utterly astonishing.
PICKUP SYSTEM - My L-05M came with the BBAND UST/AST A6 pickup system that is state of the art. I would however recommend using the CLAY SHIM treatment to bring out the MOST tone and accuracy. It costs penneys and does not harm your guitar. HOW TO ADD THE CLAY SHIM
