winterchylde's Full Review: Lateralus [PA] by Tool
With each album release, the music of Tool is a progression of artistic ability and song writing that help redefine what is acceptable in the music industry. Lateralus, the fourth studio album from Tool, is another step forward for fans and musicians. The heavy rock sound that Tool embraces is something few other bands can imitate. The past three albums from Tool carry this sound and Lateralus is no exception.
Waiting within the sleek, black exterior of Lateralus, lies the pure and raw emotion of Maynard James Keenan. His vocals cradle, caress, teach, remind, and roar in a cacophony of splendor. Beneath the lyrical ingenuity of Keenan you will find the sonic innovation of Adam Jones (guitar), Justin Chancellor (bass), and Danny Carey (drums).
It is difficult to describe the incredible music they have created within Lateralus. Jones’s guitar riffs drive this album with surety and his famous harmonic styling can be heard throughout. Chancellor’s amazing style clearly match the power of Jones’s in this album. Each of them is the perfect counterpart for the other. Carey brings it together and conquers all, in his rhythmic endeavors.
Lateralus, like all good albums should, defies that which is accepted and soars above the mediocrity of modern music. The messages that fill each song vary. The Grudge reminds us that anger and hatred hold us down. The Patient is a testament to the faith in the unknown and to hold on to it, even in the midst of doubt. Schism delves into the relationships of people, outlining the importance of communication and honesty, while lamenting the loss of closeness. Parabol and Parabola teach us to live in the moment and cherish it’s worth; that life is something to celebrate and experience. Ticks & Leeches is a retort to the users of the world. For those who do not contribute in any way, but take everything they can in their greed and hunger. Lateralis, the title track with a different spelling, has a message not unlike Parabol and Parabola. We should both have the wisdom to contemplate and the intelligence to interact in life. Disposition continues to remind us not to get caught up in everyday activities and to take the time to notice the changes around us. Reflection teaches us not to become self-absorbed in our own world, our own depressions, but to rise above, see ourselves in a new light, and find the hope.
In conclusion, I believe Lateralus to be an incredible album full of messages and innovative music. Again, Tool has broken through the barriers of mainstream music and exploded with their emotionally potent arias that fill me with inspiration.
