shopaholic_man's Full Review: Lavazza Gran Filtro Coffee Beans
The trouble with being a coffee lover is that sometimes all those coffee beans can add up. Coffee beans are usually not even sold in pound bags, but 8 to 12 ounces, and ten dollars for those. I have never seen a big 2.2 bag of any coffee beans in a grocery store, let alone Italian beans.
One day at a local deli I saw they carried LavAzza coffee. I had tried a LavAzza ground coffee at another Italian deli, and even found LavAzza ground coffee at a local grocery story. This was different though. For only $15.00, this deli had huge 2.2 bags (one Kilo!) of LavAzza coffee beans! That's a lotta beans!
LavAzza Caffe Filtro
This bag of coffee beans is from Italy, meaning the beans are roasted in Italy. It's a large blue and silver bag, so you can't miss it at a store or restaurant that sells it. I truly don't think it was meant for individual sale, but for use in a coffee shop, cafe, or restaurant. The beans themselves are 100% Arabica beans and this bag is intended primarily for use with a coffee machine that uses filters. The bag has info about the coffee beans contained therein in 9 different languages. If I had to guess, aside from English, info is in Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German.
Preparation
I put enough beans from the bag to make four cups (that's two American mugs) of coffee to start my day into my Cuisinart Bean Grinder. After I ground them up sufficiently, I placed them intoa Bunn coffee filter and then placed the filter into my Bunn Coffee maker and waited.
The Taste of Coffee from LavAzza Coffee beans.
The coffee smelled strong coming out of the bag, the beans are a rich deep brown color. I was actually quite surprised when I tasted my first cup of LavAzza coffee. It is a very smooth medium bodied coffee. If you ordered this at Starbucks it would be the very rarely ordered coffee flavored coffee. The coffee was neither earthy and rich tasting, nor was it weak and flat. I could taste in this brew why it is used in restaurants and cafes. When peoples tastes vary so much, LavAzza wanted to give everyone an average but good cup of coffee. My regret is that by making a coffee that no one can complain about a particular strong or earthy flavor, neither will any one rave about it.
Summary
The truth of the matter is that the LavAzza beans here make an average and rather bland cup of coffee. I think it would be an ideal cup to serve to guests, because there is nothing that stands out that would offend any coffee drinker. Neither was there anything here that makes this coffee lover say "wow what a great cup of coffee". It is decidely good, but average, and I give it 3 stars.
A 100% Arabica blend of mild coffees from the highlands of Central and South America for a brew with an intense sweet aroma typical of Arabica beans. ...More at Kitchen Universe
