In Brockton there is a local Italian deli that has wonderful homemade subs with real Italian cold cuts. It was there, that I saw and tried LavAzza coffee. I have since found that my supermarket also carries LavAzza Premium Drip Coffee. It is a ground coffee, and it is not available in whole beans.

Value / Packaging

Although I got this on sale for $4.99, LavAzza premium drip coffee is regularly 6.99 for a ten ounce canister. Keep in mind that Maxwell House is usually $4.99 or less for a 12 ounce canister. You can't miss the LavAzza canister either, it is what race car enthusiasts would define as "racing red". It is the same dark rich red color of Ferrari automobiles. Ah Italy. This is an Italian roast coffee too, the aribica beans are roasted in Italy. Instructions on the can are in English and Italian. The canister also informs the user that this coffee is a light blend, and it is best for filter coffee makers, but also very good for expresso or cappucino. I used it in my Bunn Coffee maker.

Aroma / Flavor

The ground looks a bit courser than most coffees, including Maxwell House. I have also tried Lavazza creme leche coffee which came in a small bag, and had a very fine grind (and a richer taste). As the other reviewer noticed here, the coffee grinds actually have an orangish tint! The coffee itself doesn't have much aroma when you open the can like fresh ground beans, but once it's on and brewing, it does have a pleasant smell. The instructions say to use one full table spoon of coffee per every six ounces of water (which is quite standard).

I really like the flavor of this ground coffee. It is not as rich as whole bean coffees, but what I really liked about it is that the taste is almost sweet. Lavazza's has a sweet smell and a slightly sweet taste to it. There is no bitterness whatsoever with this drip coffee and no acidity to it at all. What prevents me from giving the coffee a full five stars is that it does lack a bit in body. I wish this coffee was available in whole beans, I wonder if I could get the same sweet taste, but with a full body if I ground the beans fresh. This drip coffee doesn't seem particularly strong or full bodied. Lavazza's creme leche coffee had a stronger body, but it was also not as sweet. I think that grind was intended for cappucini or expresso.

Summary

I wouldn't use this as a breakfast coffee, it doesn't seem strong enough for the get up and go I need in the morning, but I think it is an excellent sweet tasting coffee that would be ideal for after dinner. As ground coffees go, Lavazza was quite good and I give it four stars.
