| artemis8's Full Review: Law Abiding Citizen |
When I first saw the trailers for Law Abiding Citizen I thought it looked good. So when we had the opportunity to see a sneak preview, my husband jumped on it and we got to see it a day before its release.
This film is about Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) whose family is brutally murdered in front of him. The perpetrators are arrested and in the court case one is cooperative and only gets 5 years in prison due to Clyde's lawyer Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) allowing a plea bargain.
Clyde isn't very happy about this. Skip ahead ten years and of the murderers is receiving lethal injection. But it goes horribly wrong. We know it has been tampered with. Nick and police suspect the now-free partner, but ultimatley Clyde seems the likely culprit.
But once Clyde is arrested mayham still ensues, even while Clyde is locked up. The criminal department is not happy about this situation and as Nick tries to figure out Clyde's brain he always seems a step behind, as Clyde continues to make those involved in the murder case pay for not having true justice served.
Clyde is amazingly smart. He is methodical and while not quite heartless, he is ruthless in his forms of justice at times. There are some very violent scenes, that aren't gratuitous, are graphic and brutal. The very first violent scene is quite disturbing and I wouldn't say the other scenes get any less so from there. This movie is rated R and deservedly so.
Just like Nick, I wasn't able to guess how Clyde was doing it. The movie was very well executed, not giving anything away. The acting was very good. There were some people that died that I wished hadn't had to, and I wish we Nick had sort of broken through to Clyde. Clyde is very tough skinned and I think his character could have been fleshed out a bit more, but overall everything worked together beautifully.
Director F Gary Gray does give us some humorous scenes as well, but the overall tone of this movie is very serious. It is suspenseful and will keep you thinking and trying to guess what will happen next. If you aren't squimish about violence, I definitely recommend this film.
