Yup, It is Crabgrass. You were right when you thought crabgrass the stuff that grows anywhere in your lawn and spreads like wildfire. Crabgrass will grow anywhere your lawn will. If you don't have crabgrass and your neighbors do; most likely you will eventually get it. Crabgrass takes over your existing lawn and it seems to eat your healthy grass up.
When we put in our lawn my husband and I were very excited to be able to watch it grow from little seedlings to a plush green grass that a golf course greenskeeper would be jealous of. My husband loved and loves getting comments on his lawn. In the winter time he has neighbors stop by and ask him "how do you keep it green" the secret is food, food and a little water.
After about the third year of living in our home we began having problems. My husband came into our home in a panic. He was upset because we had some crabgrass growing in our yard. He found the neighbors yard was full of it and it was spreading to our yard. This was in the summer time so we couldn't act on the crabgrass right away.
Crabgrass can be pulled out but it will grow right back. The best way to remove it is to use a crabgrass killer in the late fall and early spring. Crabgrass loves temperatures above 80 degrees. In order to prevent its growth and future growth a Crabgrass killer/stopper must be used. This comes in the form of a Crabgrass fertilizer.
My husband found some Crabgrass fertilizer and just prior to winter he put it on our lawn. It worked well killing our crabgrass. By the middle of the next summer the crabgrass returned. My husband was upset and thought about a solution to the problem. Our crabgrass was being killed. The neighbors wasn't and it was invading our lawn.
My husband went to an Orchard Supply Store and they had a sale on Vigoro Crabgrass Preventer Plus Fertilizer. My husband loves Scotts Fertilizers but decided to give the Vigoro a try. He bought two bags and I questioned him as to why he needed so much. He had a weird smirk on his face and he said: "I'm gonna do Brian's lawn too" He fertilized our lawn and the "neighbors" lawn to prevent the spread of crabgrass.
He told the neighbor that he bought too much so he would just use it on his lawn also. The neighbor said sure go ahead and fertilize mine too. Out came the Scotts spreader and the Vigoro Crabgrass Preventer Plus Fertilizer that was put on the lawns.
The Fertilizer must be put on in the spring before the temperatures reach the 80 degree mark, before the crabgrass has a chance to sprout. In your area if it hits 80 in April, put it on in March. If it hits 80 in March put it on in February. Prevention is the key to this problem.
The problem stopped. Our Crabgrass did not come back and the neighbors crabgrass died also. As a result our lawn has been crabgrass free for years.
Crabgrass will spread from other areas without difficulty. It doesn't know boundaries and it doesn't care where it ends up.
The Vigoro Crabgrass Preventer Plus Fertilizer 5000 square foot bag covered all of the needed front lawns. The fertilizer portion of it only lasted about two months. After that we refed our lawn with Scott's Turfbuilder. My husband has applied Vigoro Crabgrass Preventer Plus Fertilizer a couple of more times since then as a preventative and our Crabgrass is non-existent.
If you have a Crabgrass problem, cure your lawn, and any adjoining lawns that might come in contact with yours. This will save you money and time in the long run.
