Pros: *Very flavorful
*Easy to use
Cons: Not a one
If you were to ask any one of my 4 adult children (that's an oxymoron) what they would want me to make them for dinner they would all reply the same thing.........Tacos!!!
I don't think my tacos are really anything all that special, but they all love them and I'm sure some of that is the fact that taco's, burritos and chorizo is the food that they grew up on. Not only do my own children love my tacos and burritos, 7 year old Sammi and 6 year old Jake, two of my daycare children, are absolutely delighted when I tell them that I've made burritos for their dinner.
Although I don't think my tacos are all that special, I do think that Lawry's Taco Spices & Seasonings is partly responsible for most of the flavor that they do have.
These little seasoning packets are what I have always used to season the taco / burrito meat when I cook it. When we first moved to Wisconsin over 7 years ago I had use other brands because I couldn't locate the Lawry's brand, but thankfully Wal*Mart now carries it so I stock up on my shopping trips to be sure I have it on hand.
The directions on the packet are very simple:
In a 12-inch skillet brown ground beef and drain
Stir in Lawry's Taco Spices & Seasoning packet and 2/3 of a cup of water and then simmer for 5 minutes.
The one thing I do that varies from this is I also stir in a small can of tomato sauce along with the water.
I heat corn tortillas in vegetable oil and wipe off excise oil with a paper towel and then yell........They're ready!!! and I stand back.
While I'm sure I could mix the seasonings that this packet has myself, I find it handy and easy to use the packet and at under $1.00 a packet I don't find that it really adds much expense to making my family so happy.
The packet tells me that eating two tacos using this seasoning will add 15 calories.....not bad at all. There is no fat, less than 1g of sugar. Of course adding seasonings also means that you are going to be adding some sodium too. A 2 tsp serving (serving in 2 tacos) will add 330mg of sodium to your days diet so some caution should be used if you are concerned with sodium content in your foods.
The packet that I have also has a recipe for Chili Con Queso Dip on it. I've never tried the recipe, but it sounds good.
I appreciate that there is a use by date on each packet as well. While I generally use them up well before the date, it is good to be able to check that I haven't passed one up and allowed it to get by that date.
Ingredients: Spices (Paprika, Cumin, Oregano, Chili Peppers) Onion Salt, Lactose (Milk) Sugar, Garlic Powder, Enriched Wheat Flour, Folic Acid, Cocoa Powder, Citric Acid, Natural Flavors
So, if you are wanting to make some great tacos or burritos I very highly recommend using Lawry's Taco Spices & Seasonings for a delicious way to give them just the right amount of flavor and spice. Not too hot, but it definitely adds a great bit of mexican flavor to the meat.
