| donnamr's Full Review: Lazy Pet Products PetOPedic Bed |
Oliver, my 11-year-old Sheltie, has a host of medical conditions and ailments, including arthritis in his hind legs. I'm constantly on the lookout for aids that will make his life more comfortable. The Lazy Pet Orthopedic Pet Bed has been a wonderful help in this. Not only did Oliver immediately take to the bed, but my younger Sheltie, Alfie, and my four cats prefer this over any other sleeping spot in the house (except MY bed, of course.) I'm planning to purchase a second Lazy Pet orthopedic bed to meet the demand!
SIZE:
The bed comes in a variety of sizes, with the smallest suitable for cats and the largest good for dogs about the size of a German Shepherd. I chose a medium sized bed that easily accommodates Oliver and one cat at the same time.
CONSTRUCTION:
The inner portion of the bed is made of a 4-inch thick substance called convoluted foam. This is densely packed polyurethane foam on a thick base with rows of foam "spikes". These spikes supposedly provide the orthopedic benefits of the bed by shaping to the contour of the pet's anatomy. This is supposed to alleviate pressure on certain points of the body, such as the hips. Protecting the foam filling is a removable heavy cotton-blend cover with a sheepskin-like material on one side.
APPEARANCE:
The bed is oblong in shape. The cover is fitted with a zipper along the entire length of its shortest side.
The cover comes in a variety of colors - some plain, some with colorful prints. I chose a neutral color so that it fits the décor of any room to which I may need to move the bed.
CLEANING:
With 6 animals in the house, 3 of whom are long-haired, I have a sizable fur problem. Using a hand vacuum or a lint roller easily keeps the bed free of fur accumulation, reducing the need to launder to times when body oils build up. For those occasions, the cover slips off easily. The label instructs machine washing in cold water with line drying. Cleaning couldn't be easier! I've washed mine once, and experienced no shrinkage or color fading.
DURABILITY:
This is a well-made bed, with strong stitching in the cover. It stands up well to cat claws. The cover does not move out of place, even when the animal moves around a great deal on the bed.
COST:
Prices of the beds vary, depending upon the size purchased. The smallest runs about $19.99; the most expensive I saw was $69.99. The costliest model had a separate section that serves as a pillow (I've always considered my pets to be fairly intelligent, but I can't imagine them being able to distinguish which end is supposed to be for their heads.) I paid $39.99 plus tax for mine. I didn't do any comparison-shopping, because I happened to be in PetSmart at a time when Oliver was having some mobility problems, saw the bed on display, and decided to try it.
By observing Oliver's actions, I feel confident that the orthopedic bed has increased his comfort level. He certainly prefers lying on it to anything else in the house. I highly recommend this bed, not only for animals with problems, but for any pet. I certainly intend to keep it as a staple pet supply in my house.
The listing in Epinions is "Pet-O-Pedic Bed," but the product labels actually read, "Orthopedic Pet Bed."
