Pros:A fantastic, rich, sweet & spicy steak sauce.
Cons:Cost, but it's worth it.
The Bottom Line: Our family used Lea & Perrins Steak Sauce exclusively, nothing else comes close to the great, rich taste.
I grew up using one and only one kind of steak sauce, and that was Heinz 57. When I married my husband he only desired to use A1 Steak Sauce, so we became a two steak sauce family. I didn't think anything could come close to making my steak taste better ... until a friend served Lea & Perrins Steak Sauce at a barbecue!

Oh my gosh, is this stuff ever good! It's now a family favorite, and when we serve steaks for dinner they are not complete without it. If we run out, I hear it from my hubby, so I always try to have one extra bottle on hand.
The Lea & Perrins brand has been around since 1835, and while I was very familiar with their worcestershire sauce, I never enjoyed it on my steaks. This is what restaurants usually serve as a steak sauce, and it never even dawned on me that Lea & Perrins might have made another style of steak sauce.
The product comes in a rectangular shaped plastic bottle, with a dark brown flip top cap. It's normally packaged in a 10 ounce size, but the last bottle I purchased was a 15 ounce for a 10 ounce price. The front of the bottle states that this is a traditional steak sauce.
The Heinz 57 steak sauce that I had used for years always came in a glass bottle, and it was hard to get all of the sauce out. This isn't a problem with the Lea & Perrins Steak Sauce because the bottle is squeezeable, and the top is designed to be drip free.
I appreciate that the label does not wrap around the entire bottle, so I can see exactly how much steak sauce is left and know when I need to buy more!
The side of the label states that this is a fat free and cholesterol free product. It does have 25 calories per tablespoon, 390 mg of sodium, 5 carbs, and 3 g of sugar.
The sauce is a dark brown color, and it's very thick and rich. I would say this is a spicy sweet flavor, with a little bit of a tang to it. It definitely has a bold taste, but it doesn't take away from the flavor of the steak.
It smells similar to Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce, and you even get a hint of that Worcestershire taste, but there are so many other ingredients added to give it that sweet and spicy taste, this truly stands on it's own.
We love this sauce so much that we actually use it on hamburgers instead of catsup. My husband uses it when I serve meatloaf, although I prefer the sweet and sour tomato sauce with my meatloaf. I've even put it out when I serve chicken, and as long as the poultry is pretty plain, it also works well in this manner.
When we dine at a restaurant and order steak, we always ask for Lea & Perrins steak sauce. Unfortunately, they always bring us the worcestershire sauce. Sadly, I have yet to find a restaurant that serves this product.
Distilled vinegar, tomato puree (water, tomato paste), high fructose corn syrup, raisin paste, molasses, salt, orange marmalade base (orange, grapefruit and lemon juices), onion, dried apple, lemon juice concentrate, tamarind extract, anchovies, garlic, spices, zanthan gum, potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate added for freshness. Natural flavors.
I refer to Lea & Perrins Traditional Steak Sauce as a gourmet steak sauce. The price reflects this mode of thinking as well, since this bottle costs around $5.00.
WalMart makes a steak sauce that tastes similar to this one, for only $2.00, but after trying it once we went back to the Lea & Perrins. It is our only steak sauce, and we will accept NO substitutes!!
I've heard that people in the south have a hard time finding Lea & Perrins Steak Sauce, but living in Alaska I have never been in this predicament! All of my local supermarkets sell it, and I hope Lea & Perrins continues to sell this on the West Coast.
