Lean Body For Her by Labrada - Want a Picture of Lee?
Written: Mar 02 '02
Pros:Decent protein; soy, low carbs, tastes good; vitamins/minerals
Cons:Pricey, not super, super delicious (but good)
The Bottom Line: These are tasty, although a bit more expensive than Balance Gold bars and I like them. I would use them as a snack more than an energy bar though.
I was in CVS not too long ago and a lot of bars were on sale. This one caught my eye because it was low in carbohydrates, but not zero, low in sugar and high in protein. With that in mind Labrada’s Lean Body For Her makes a good snack bar.
About the bar:
1. It was awarded the “Best of Show “ Gold Medal for taste at The American Tasting Institute.
2. At the People's Choice competition at the National Nutritional Food Association meeting in Las Vegas, the Lean Body® For Her Bar was a winner. After tasting and comparison, people attending the show voted Labrada bars their favorite -- choosing them over a wide range of "energy bars," "nutritional bars," and other protein bars competing in the category. 3. It has Soy Protein. More and more often we are reading in magazine and here on epinions about the benefits of soy. I’ve said in other reviews that soy has been identified as a nutrient, which may help reduce the risk of heart disease. I want to repeat, though, that there is some controversy over amounts of soy. At one time, the thought was the more the better. I have now heard and read that some breast cancers do not react well to a lot of soy so check with your doctor if you have or had breast cancer or are in a high-risk group.
4. The bar also contains calcium needed for healthy bones and may help in the prevention of osteoporosis.
5. It has B Vitamins, which are important to proper metabolism of protein and fat, and help support nerve and brain function.
6. It has iron, which is important to women in preventing iron-deficiency anemia.
7. Lean Body For Her has antioxidants such as vitamins C and E protect your body against free radicals and contribute to a healthy immune system.
8. It has Folic Acid which can help protect against heart disease and stroke by helping decrease the levels of certain amino acids in the blood.
~I rarely write about vitamins but this information was so good and from the website that I thought it helpful to those who don’t know what vitamins do for what part of the body.
~ I am reviewing the Chocolate Honey Peanut flavored bar. Others include mint chocolate chip and peanut butter and jelly.
~Check the expiration date, which is imprinted under the flap by the nutrition facts on the package.
~This is a 1.76 ounce bar.
Nutritional Information:
This bar has 190 calories (60 of which are from fat); 7 grams of fat (3.5 are saturated); no cholesterol; 135 grams of sodium; 150 mg of potassium; 10 grams of carbohydrates, less than 1 gram of fiber, 6 grams of sugar; 7 grams of glycerine and 16 grams of protein.
Other vitamins and minerals include: D (50% of daily needed value); Thiamin (50%); Niacin (50%); Biotin (50%); Phosphorous (20%); magnesium (20%); copper (25%); riboflavin (50%); the Bs include 6 and 12 (50% each); Iodine (20%) and Zinc (20%)
What they taste like:
~These are square bars covered in chocolate. The chocolate if really, really thick. It is the predominant taste of this bar, which isn’t bad for me since I love chocolate. I also love peanuts and they don’t have the peanut taste that Balance Gold has.
~ The inside is the consistency of a brownie. It is very soft to bite into and not chewy. One problem with that is that it can be gone in 30 seconds!
~They have very little aftertaste; however, not surprisingly, whenever it seems the carbohydrates are taken out so is the sugar and there leaves a slight aftertaste. The aftertaste is very mild but they aren't as delicious as Balance Gold which had no aftertaste.
~The consistency is very, very soft so in spite of keeping it in the refrigerator it started to melt in my hands while I was eating it. I try to keep a bar in my gym bag. This would be a decent one to have but it will melt. It also may not have enough carbohydrates (10 versus 23 in Balance Gold) and sugar if you are feeling hypoglycemic which is what happens to me. Oftentimes after a hard workout, when I hit the treadmill, I start to feel lightheaded and weak and I know I have to eat or drink something. This is when a bar comes in but I prefer the Balance Gold for that purpose.
~I like the Lean Body as a snack because it has less sugar and fewer calories than Balance Gold and it has soy and protein.
Where to buy Lean Body Bars:
I bought mine at CVS for $2.00. You can buy them at most discount stores, vitamin stores and health food stores as well as online at www.leanbodyforher.com for $29.85 for 15 bars. There is a $5.00 shipping charge, which makes each bar $2.32. You will also find them at www.labrada.com for the same price naturally. They only show that they have 2 flavors, mine and chocolate chip, yet I remember seeing the peanut butter and jelly and on all the sites I’ve gone to I’ve seen more than 2 packages! Another discrepancy perhaps. As I said, they were on sale at CVS. The usual price there is around $2.50 but the price does vary by store.
You can call them us at: 1-800-832-9948 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to place your order if you would rather do that.
My final thoughts: (finally!)
~I prefer this bar as a snack if I want something with lots of vitamins and minerals, low in calories, low in sugar and sweet. They have 4 points on the Weight Watchers chart so eating ˝ of the bar would fill my sweet tooth at little cost to my points.
~This bar is on the high side price wise, which doesn’t surprise me. I look at it as I would a bar by EAS (Bill Phillips) and other “gourmet” or high-powered bars because they are made by Labrada Nutrition whose slogan is, "The Most Trusted Name in Nutrition."
Check out www.labradanutrition.com. You’ll find a picture of Lee himself and this promotion:
"Make A Donation To KID CARE And Get A Personally Autographed Picture From Lee Labrada And A 10% Discount On Your Next Online Purchase From LABRADA."
~Although these say For Her, there is nothing about them that makes them only for women! They have added soy to the bar and there are fewer carbohydrates than those for men, but there is no reason than a man cannot eat these so I am clicking on adults when asked whom would I recommend these for. I do not recommend any type of "bar" for children.
~I will definitely recommend these as a snack bar that has quite a bit of nutrition. They really don’t have enough protein to be considered meal replacement bars, but that is your choice. If you have any questions, please leave me a comment or e-mail me.
Additional ingredients:
Blend of soy protein isolate, calcium, milk chocolate flavored coating, non fat milk, lactose, cocoa, dextrose, soy defatted peanut flour, the vitamins and minerals noted above, cellulose gel, salt, sucralose, soy lecithin, maltodextrin guar gum. If you want a complete list of ingredients within these ingredients, please let me know.
