We got this for our 7 1/2 month old daughter. It is nice and compact, but has LOTS of functions!
Various buttons teach numbers, the alphabet, colors, shapes and others. The voices are engaging and singing is nice. After a few days of your child playing, you will know them by heart. It gets a little tedious, but so do all the electronic toys... this is no worse than others.
The various voices and songs teach "up" and "down", "high" and "low", "open" and "closed", colors, numbers, etc. There is also a slider on a mock trombone, which then makes a sound like playing a trombone. It really covers most of the bases.
The 3 "AA" batteries seem to last reasonably well, so long as you turn it off when not in use. The on/off switch is on its top, so it is easy for adults to access.
The top, which contains all the buttons and switches can be removed from the legs, so it is usable by a crawling child or a child who is learning or has learned to walk. We have found it very useful as our daughter learns to stand and walk. When the legs are connected, the unit has a nice, wide stance and is very sturdy. The ability to remove the top also makes this a pretty good traveling companion - to take to Grandma's house, for example.
The particular item we have has been used for 2 years before we got it, and it is in perfect shape, and works as if it was brand new. It seems to be well made and can last a while.
I would recommend this item for children 6 months+.
