tomandkellyo's Full Review: LeapFrog Learn and Groove Musical Table
My wife found this table at a local garage sale for $10. It was in like-new condition, so she decided to give it a try for our first son. My wife and I both agree that this has been one of the best purchases we have made for our children. Since our oldest son began to pull himself up and stand to play with it, it has seen LOTS of use. Now he and our younger son continue to enjoy its many functions. It is the first toy their little friends and cousins run for when they visit our house.
The height (with legs) is perfect for those little ones who are new to standing. The legs can also be removed for use by younger infants, but we have not done this.
There is an amazing assortment of activities and interactive features on this little table. (Note that we have found that the colors of some of the following items may differ slightly from table to table.) Spin the clear, bead-filled cylinder to hear the upbeat ABC song. A trombone features a slide that triggers a counting song. Lift the little purple door to learn about “open and closed”. Red, yellow, green, and blue piano keys teach color recognition. Using the cello slide teaches the toddler about “up and down”. Pull a handle to spin Tad’s (the LeapFrog mascot) banjo for “lights on, lights off” and to hear various melodies and songs. The book in the middle of the table allows the child to flip the page, switching the table’s functions from Learning Mode to the Music Mode. A wide variety of sounds, melodies, nursery rhyme songs, flashing light patterns and more keeps kids entertained for hours. And, unlike some other toys, the female voice that sings and speaks is very pleasant and friendly, without overdoing it. We found that this toy gave the boys even more reason to learn how to pull themselves up and stand so they could enjoy its many pleasures.
The table requires 3 “AA” batteries. I do not believe these are included with new tables. The battery life is quite impressive, considering the assortment of lights and sounds the table produces. As with many battery-operated kids’ toys, when the battery power is low, it will act and sound peculiar (“static” in the sound, lights won’t turn off, etc.). Your first thought may be that the table is having a major malfunction, but a fresh set of batteries should prove to be the cure.
Construction of this table is sturdy, and has stood up incredibly well to the hard usage of our boys, in addition to the usage it saw before we bought it. The only issue we have discovered is that the little purple door unsnaps at the hinges. It easily snaps right back into place until our little roughnecks unsnap it again.
With all of its “nooks and crannies”, the table top is not the easiest surface to clean in the event of a spill or spit up. The smooth portions easily wipe clean, but all of those little keys and slides and shapes present a bit of a challenge.
We have recommended this table to many of our friends and relatives, and will continue to do so. Even at the full retail price (around $39.99), our experience with the Learn & Groove table is that it is worth every penny.
