| momtograyson's Full Review: Leap Frog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Set |
I over heard a few moms discussing these great new magnetic letters from Leap Frog, that are actually interactive, so naturally I just had to check it out! My son has always loved the alphabet song, and when I heard that this set actually sings, I was sold! Of course, we already had the cheap plastic regular fridge letters, but most of them were missing from getting lost all over the house.
I went to my nearest Walmart and bought the set, and was surprised at the chunky letter pieces and the cute "singing box" that came with them.
All of the pieces are made from sturdy, durable plastic that are easy to wipe clean. Because of the large size of the letter pieces, they are easy to spot around the house, so after having these for over 6 months, I'm happy to proclaim that each piece is accounted for and located on the fridge!
Each capital letter stands out 3 dimensionally on a sturdy white u-shaped backing, which is pressed into the u-shaped area on the "singing box." The letters are 4 different colors, green, red, blue and yellow. (A is red, G is green, F is blue, etc.)
The letters and electronic "singing box" have been thrown to the ground, dropped, slid across the floor, and are all in perfect working and cosmetic condition. I would say this is one tough little toy! Perfect for those of us with rough and tumble boys (or girls!) that love to hear things go "bang" on the floor!
When the letters are placed into the "singing box," the letter itself can be pressed and then the respective song plays, (for example) "G: G says Gu, G says Gu, Every letter makes a sound, G says Gu and Ju".
There is a red music note located under the letter receiver which, when pressed, plays the alphabet song. To the left of the music note is the speaker, and to the right of the music note is the off and volume selector. Yes! This is one toy with volume control! The volume has 2 settings, and even the higher of the two has yet to get on my nerves!
The "Leap Frog" frog is located to the left of where the letters are placed in the box, as a cute decorative touch.
Letters A-P are across the width of the upper portion of the box, and Q-Z are located just under the u-shaped opening that accepts the letter pieces.
The unit uses 3 AAA batteries, which are included. As I said, we've had this for over 6 months and we still are using the batteries that were originally in it when we purchased it! The battery compartment needs a screw driver to be opened, which is a plus with my battery obsessed 2.5 year old son!
My son has a great time singing along with the alphabet song, and I constantly find him dancing around the kitchen, singing the ABC's, with the box in his hand. He also loves to dance when the letters are doing their individual songs.
At just 10 months old, my daughter located these, and broke out in smiles when she pressed the music note and was greeted by the happy ABC song! Now she can't be kept away, and crawls from any where in the house to play with the "singing box!"
I would love to see this set come out with a number set, and even pieces that have the upper and lower case letters together respectively.
Because this set has been such a big hit here, I'm seriously considering that Leap Frog Fridge Farm...
