| hdmcginnis's Full Review: Leap Frog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Set |
I purchased the Leapfrog Fridge Phonics set for my 20-month old son because he can say the alphabet but doesn't recognize any letters yet. It took him a few minutes to figure out how to insert the letters into the main device, but once he figured it out he was hooked. He quickly became very adept at changing the letters as well as pushing the music note button to hear the entire alphabet song.
I like that the letter magnets are larger than typical fridge alphabet magnets. This means they don't get lost as easily. I also like that the magnet itself is enclosed behind plastic. I don't worry about the little magnets falling out so my son can choke on them. From that standpoint it is a nicely designed toy.
My complaints... first, I find it is difficult to understand the song being played with some letters. The "F" sounds a bit like "S" and the "M" and "N" could be a bit confusing. I think the sound quality could be enhanced.
Second, I do not like the volume control. It is on the front of the toy which makes it very easy for my son to adjust (i.e. he turns it ALL the way up when I am on the phone). Or he accidentally turns it off and then gets very frustrated that it is not working. It would have been nice to have the volume control on the back. I also don't think the "soft" setting is particularly quiet.
Finally, I wish it played a few different songs. The music note button only plays the alphabet song, so it can become very repetitive to constantly hear the same "ditty" followed by the same song. It would have been nice to have two or three possible songs instead of only one.
All in all it is a great toy and my son enjoys it very much. I wish they had made the above changes, though. They would definitely be improvements.
