| pixelfaler's Full Review: Leap Frog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Set |
We bought these for my daughter's Christmas last year (she's 3 now), thinking that it would be a good way to teach her the alphabet. She already knew the ABC song, so we were hoping she'd learn to match the letter with what it actually looks like.
I was very pleased with the fact that the toy also goes over the phonetic sounds that go with each letter. Having learned to read using phonics myself and seeing a decline in its use in schools where we are, I felt even better about this purchase, seeing as how it could very well help my daughter to read letters, not just recognize them. Since this toy can be used to teach a child to read, they won't outgrow it in a year like many other toys on the market.
We've had this for over a year now and haven't had to change the batteries once. It's still going strong on the batteries that came with it. She plays with it any time I'm in the kitchen----and quite a few when she's by herself. Like any other noise-making toy, repetition can really grate on your nerves, but at least it can grate in varying degrees of volume (thank you Leap Frog for putting volume control on that thing!). I've had to fish magnets out from under the fridge more times than I can count and we haven't seen all 26 letters in one place for weeks now---but at least I know she didn't swallow them! They're large enough that they don't fit in her mouth and the magnet itself is sealed within the letter, so she's not going to break that off in her mouth and swallow it. I've found the chunkier structure of these magnets helps with small children being able to manipulate them without adult help, which is really nice for when they're playing and you're fixing supper.
The whole ensemble wipes clean easily enough with a damp washcloth, sponge, or even one of those Lysol wipe-things (with it being in a kitchen and therefore prone to get stuff on it, this is a great thing) and it's also easily packed into an activity bag for car trips. I've taken this toy with me on vacations and had other parents want to know where they can get it, too. It's a great value and I'm glad we decided to buy it.
