Pros: sturdy, versatile, adjustable volume
Cons: school bus doesnt "lock" into place in any way
The Bottom Line: Great toy for older 2's and 3's but if you have an older child I would go with the regular leappad.

| mom2emma's Full Review: Leap Frog My First LeapPad |
I had considered buying this for my daughter until I found out it was near the same price as the regular leappad, not as many books were available for it, and was for ages 3 and up. So I decided I would just wait and get the regular leappad in a year or so since that is what my older daughter and nephew have.
But we frequently use my older daughters leappad for travel and on a recent trip my youngest was none to happy that she couldnt play. So when I was able to get the My First Leappad on sale with a coupon at Amazon I decided to try it.
BOY AM I HAPPY I DID!!! This toy is great. What my daughter really likes is the schoolbus plate you can put on the leappad instead of a book. It has a horn that honks when you touch it, the wheels when touched play the "wheels on the bus" tune, it has a window that goes up and down, laughing kids AND the entire alphabet to learn. What more could a child want. Well whatever it is, they get it with the flip book that comes with it too. The flip books for the my first leappad have a story on one side and flip it over and it is an activity book. The one that comes with it features counting, shapes, and is all on a farm. My kids LOVE animals so this was perfect. My older daughter even wanted to play with this instead. Now they willingly play and trade each other all the time.
I was excited to see they also came out with new books for this. We purchased the Winnie the Pooh book to go with it as well. Now they have a Dora the Explorer book.
OK onto the facts and such. The toy is sturdy and has a handle for carrying. I wish it flipped closed in some way like the regular one because without that, when carrying, the bus does not stay in place at all and the books barely do. The books are easy to use and lock into place though, rather than just sit on it like the regular leappad The bus does not lock into place in any way though and I wish it would since sometimes toddlers and preschoolers get a bit rowdy and it will knock out of place. Then pen is the neartouch technology just like the regular leappad which makes it easy to use. The pen is super sturdy, my kids have carried it by the pen and even fought over it by the pen and it still works like new. The pen also is replaceable should anything happen and has a place where it stores. The toy takes AA batteries like its counterpart which last a really long time thankfully, I hate toys that eat batteries. It also has that always great headphone jack. The only other drawback to me is I wish it was Mindquest compatible and/or had a subscription type thing like the Leaps Pond for the older kids.
I think that just about covers it. All in all it is a great toy. Despite the, for ages 3 and up rating, I bought this for my 2 year old who LOVES it and does great with it. I wouldn't get it for a young 2 or any younger than that though, they probably wouldnt have good enough coordination or fine moter skills. The toy is sturdy, grows with the child, is educational, and great for travel, the stroller, etc.
