Pros: Will hold a child's attention, educational, fun, portable.
Cons: books don't lock in place and move around too much
The Bottom Line: Great toy! Adults love it too. Can be the main present for Christmas if you include another couple books. Or makes a great educational birthday present for someone turning 3.

| suzanny's Full Review: Leap Frog My First LeapPad |
My First LeapPad comes with one book and an alphabet schoolbus. We've had ours for 2 weeks, and there are so many activities and games in just that one book, that each time my daughter picks it up, it's still as fresh of a game as when she first started playing with it.
It's the first electronic toy that my daughter, now 2-1/2, plays with all the time, that doesn't drive me crazy! There are so many different things she can choose to do, that it's not too repetitive. I had avoided most toddler games that made any sounds because I end up having to hide them! This is more like a preschool game, but 2 year olds should be able to learn the pen quickly. My daughter is still having trouble with the computer mouse, so this was a very nice alternative to computer games, plus it's portable!
When I bought it, I had the hope that my daughter would be introduced to more critical thinking challenges, along with phonics and basic math. I also imagined using it in the car to occupy her. I didn't realize that we spend more quality time together. We're having a lot of fun taking turns, and it's really nice pointing to each word on the page and have it read back each word.
Now, there is still a downside to this toy. I was happy with the price, $35 at wal-mart, but I would rather have had them spend $5 more on quality. There are two small hooks that I think are there to hold the book in place, but it doesn't work at all. If my daughter moves the book around, it stops working. The book has very large spiral binding, and my daughter gets frustrated because she tries to fold all the pages down (just like any adult would do using a spiral notebook), but then the pages don't line up, and the pen doesn't recognize the correct spot. I've had to help her a few times to make sure the book is sitting correctly in the holder, but she's learning this as well.
I've had trouble finding all the additional books. I found one at Wal-Mart, but Dora the Explorer is sold out everywhere online (as of this posting, 9/11/02).
