We bought the Spanish version of this toy for our daughter when she was about 4 months old, and she loved it immediately. Admittedly, I did not enjoy it as much, but how often do we enjoy the repetition that comes from all of our kids' toys?

The toy is a ball attached to a detachable base. It is battery operated, however I'm not sure what batteries it uses because we have not had to change them in the 6 months we've had it. It has 3 settings: ABC, LETTER SOUNDS & MUSIC as well as two volume settings: LOUD and NOT QUITE SO LOUD. The idea is that the child spins the ball to get it started. In both the ABC and LETTER SOUNDS functions, the ABC song is recited while the ball is spinning (A..B..C..D..and so on). The ball has 26 buttons (1 for each letter of the alphabet) around the center of the ball, which, if pressed in the ABC function, it tells you the name of the Letter, if pressed in the LETTER SOUND function, it tells you the name of the letter and the sound ("A"-A says AH). In the MUSIC function, the spinning ball plays a song (the same song every time), if one of the letter buttons is pressed, which is not difficult at all for kids, a different song will play. There is a different song stored for each letter.
My daughter learned to spin the ball very quickly, and enjoyed it immensely. I always shift her toys so she doesn't bore of them so when I brought the ball out again last month she loved it all over again. She's now 10 months old, and can press all of the buttons without any problem, and does so for hours on end. I now know the ABCs in Spanish, which I never thought I would, and I'm sure my daughter will as well as soon as she can speak clearly. :-) I saw the reviews for this item after purchasing, and I'm glad that was the case because this is a great toy; very educational and entertaining: each letter plays a different song in the music setting! The only thing I would change or rather add is that I would have 2 language settings on the ball (English and Spanish)
Oh, and her 3 year old cousin loves to take it out of its base and spin it around the house so it's even entertaining for older kids.
I know people mentioned the volume being too high, but I haven't found that to be a problem seeing as most toys make a lot of noise anyway, this isn't any louder than any of her other toys, and at least she's learning something with this "noise".
I would highly recommend this toy to anyone, and have also given it as gifts many times.
