mickp's Full Review: Learning Resources LER0037 Primary Calculator Sing...
As a middle school mathematics teacher I have a lot of experience with calculators. When you are dealing with dozens of the things throughout the course of the year, you get a pretty good idea of the quality of the product.
The Learning Resources LER0037 is a bare bones, basic calculator suitable for simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, division problems involving both integers and decimals. In addition it has the standard square root, percentage and single item memory functionality. In short - this is not a scientific calculator, so if you're looking for sines, cosines and tangents - look elsewhere.
My room last year came equipped with a box of these LER0037 calculators, all of which were still fully functional and intact by the end of the year. The unit is built of sturdy blue plastic that is moulded with rounded edges so it slots comfortably into the palm of the hand of either children or adults. The buttons on this small device are large enough and far apart enough for convenient operation and there's no danger of mashing nearby keys in errors. I appreciated the way the compact design allowed me to operate this model one-handed, entering numbers with my thumb while seated, while entering or writing down grades with my other hand.
The liquid crystal display screen is of respectable size and provides clear, easy to read output of results up to eight digits long.
Power to this unit is provided either by a single AA battery or a small solar panel on the front. I found that the solar functionality was less than I have experienced with other calculators and in slightly dim conditions the display may be dimmed significantly or power may even fail. For this reason I found it best to keep a battery installed in all my calculators. I am not sure if solar energy somehow gets priority over the battery so that it can save battery life when it is able - if so this might be a neat feature. The unit automatically turns itself off after a certain period of inactivity to save battery life - something very important when unreliable middle schoolers are the primary users of your calculators.
While a more sleek and "professional" design and colour scheme may be preferred for businesses and offices, this calculator is great solution for those seeking a no-frills and reliable tool to help with simple mathmatical problems in the classroom or home.
