| ewilliam's Full Review: Leatherman Tool Leatherman Micra Multitool |
Let me first say that I have owned (and still own) 2 other, larger Leatherman tools (Super Tool & Wave), and I think that Leatherman is one of the best tool manufacturers out there. However, I've always wanted a Micra, because I can't carry the full-size tools everywhere, and 'everywhere' is invariably where I'll need them the most.
So, I was graduating last year, moving out of my college house where many people, and their things, had come and gone, and I come across a Micra tool underneath a piece of furniture. I knew it wasn't mine, and neither of my current roommates owned it...so I kept it. The problem was, the scissors were all gnarled and virtually unusable. So, I e-mailed Leatherman and asked them how I could take the tool apart to sharpen the scissor blades. Instead, they told me to send it to them, and they'd replace it for free! Imagine that, I find the tool, and without a reciept or proof of ownership, they simply send me a new one. It was at this point that I knew I was dealing with a high-class outfit.
And lo and behold, a few weeks later, I get my new Micra in the mail, and man, I love this thing! It has gotten me out of many a jam, especially the screwdrivers. The scissors, while unsharpenable, seem to last as long as you don't try to cut steel or anything. The portability is great, and I have it on my keychain at all times.
Individual Features Evaluation
-The scissors are great, and cut through most anything. It's mas helpful having a pair of scissors in your pockets whenever you need them...since they're the one thing I can never find. And they're fine enough that they can cut straight!
-The screwdrivers: it has one large straight, one small straight (on the end of the bottle opener), and a phillips head. This is basically all you need. The size of the phillips makes it compatible with most any screws, while the two straight drivers can tackle most jobs as well.
-The tweezers: good for removing a splinter or craftworks, etc. Not so good for plucking your eyebrows ;-)
-The bottle opener is fantastic to have, and works like a charm
-The knife is sharp and adequate, though the small size makes it awkward for larger tasks
-The file is good for fingernails, but not much else. I think that's what it's made for, really.
-The ruler markings on the outside, while small, can prove invaluable for certain tasks
-The keyring is the clincher. I have it attached to my keychain via a quick-release device, so I can detach it anytime, and my keys don't get in the way.
Overall, I think I can safely say that this is one of the things in my daily life that I would not want to do without. It takes care of so many small tasks, and saves me the time and energy of going out to the garage and rifling through my took chests just to find a screwdriver. I have it on my keychain, and while it adds a little weight to my pocket, that's a small price to pay for the advantages this thing affords me. Even with large construction projects, if I can't immediately find a tool (which happens all too often), this thing almost always does the job. I really think everyone needs one of these tools, no matter what you do...because everyone comes across those little things that require a tool, but aren't worth going out to the shed for. And the quality of all Leatherman tools is impeccable. Yes, it'd be nice if it were easier to sharpen the scissor blades, but who cares? If they dull, Leatherman will send you a whole new Micra, free of charge. Now that's what I call a great company.
