I got the leatherman as a Christmas gift two years ago, and not having one before, I was concerned that I would never use it. I live in a condo, don't go camping, and don't have anything to fix. But even so, I still use this tool several times a year, which is more than any other tool I have.
The Leatherman is very solidly built, it is not a flimsy soon-to-break tool. In addition, it has several different tools built into it, but folds up safely for your pocket, kitchen drawer or glove compartment. I use the pliers / wire cutter the most, but also the flat and phillips head screwdriver, ruler and bottle opener. What types of 'household' jobs is it good for? The screwdrivers are nice for assembling things, like connecting a cable to the computer. I've used the wire cutters to cut wires, cut the tie cables that are used to tightly package things and use the pliers to pull nails. The knife is good to open boxes and bags. The ruler, to get a rough measurement in a pinch.
That's just off the top of my head. This tool has replaced several of tools and is the first one I grab now when I need one. Toolophobes, don't be afraid of this tool! It can be your best friend.
