The Original Leatherman Wave: This baby puts the Swiss Army Knife to shame!

Written: Apr 13 '01
Pros:It does everything!
Cons:A little larger than your average Swiss Army Knife.
The Bottom Line: It can do practically any job, and it fits in the palm of your hand!

Years ago, an engineer by the name of Tim Leatherman became frustrated with his plain old scout knife. He wanted something that could do everything. He wanted a tool that could cut, screw, file, and ply. So, he decided to invent the Leatherman Wave. The Leatherman Wave is a multipurpose tool that can do it all. It is like a Swiss Army Knife, but with an added twist.

The tools

Pliers
The Leatherman Wave comes with two sets of pliers, needlenose and regular. Both are very powerful and extremely easy to use. Also, if you fold the handles over, the pliers will disappear into the tool and it will look pretty much like a Swiss Army Knife.

Wire Cutters
In the mouth of the pliers is a small wire cutter. This is also very powerful, and once again, easy to use. There is also a wire stripper that folds out of the bottom of the tool.

Screwdrivers
There is a Phillips screwdriver, large screwdriver, medium screwdriver, small, and extra-small screwdriver. In other words, this baby will fit pretty much any screw! The drivers are built into the sides of the tool, and flip out easily. They do not have separate handles, however, and you have to hold them still because they do not lock.

Knives
I know, this is what you have been waiting for. What kind of tool would the Leatherman Wave be without a set of knives? Well, this baby has an extremely sharp, and very large knife, as well as a wood saw and a serrated knife. All three of these knives lock in place, which makes for a much safer and easier cut. However, make sure to keep the Leatherman Wave away from small prying fingers, because it is very sharp. These knives are the real meat and potatoes of the Leatherman Wave. They are extremely sharp, and between the three of them, they can cut through practically anything. You could even use it as a steak knife (even though I can hardly see why you would want to)!

Other
The Leatherman Wave also includes a pair of handy scissors, a diamond coated file, a lanyard attachment, and a bottle opener. The scissors are much easier to use than Swiss Army Knife scissors, because there is a little lever used for cutting. Since the scissors are small, it is a real pain to have to push the two blades together with your fingers, and this lever helps a lot. Also, it has a nice leather carrying case that can fit easily into your pocket.

Facts about the Leatherman Wave
It weighs 8 oz. (224 grams), it is 4 inches (10 cm) and it is made out of 100% stainless steel. It has a lifetime guarantee, and I honestly can not imagine how you could break this baby. Its handle is rounded so that it feels nice and smooth.

In conclusion. . .
The Leatherman Wave is a must buy for all you do-it-yourself men out there. It can do practically any job, and it fits in the palm of your hand! I'm sorry to admit that I do not know what it costs, I received it as a gift. However, the prices listed on this website say that the tool is around $50-$60. Honestly, I would probably buy this thing for $100 if that was the cost. Believe me, this tool is a must have!
