Secret Alien Signaling Device? No, Just A Geek Gift That Keeps On Giving!

Written: Jul 17 '08 (Updated Jul 17 '08)
Pros:The definitive geek watch
Cons:Battery consumption
The Bottom Line: A great birthday or christmas gift, the binary watch is fashion statement!

Aside from a pocket protector and thick glasses, no other clothing accessory can proclaim your geek status like the Samui Moon, LED Blue Binary Watch. Sporting a thick metallic case and the cliché green motherboard under its glass cover, the 10 Binary LED watch certainly stands out in crowd.

What is binary?
A numeral system often called base-2, binary is the language of modern computing. All files and instructions in a microprocessor are read in this format. The computer then converts the data into a human legible form called ASCII. The first binary transmission occurred on September 11, 1940 when George Stibitz sent commands over telephone lines by teletype. Early mainframe computer software was written in binary only. The programmers who wrote this software could read pages of binary text and tell someone else how the resulting program would operate! Today, modern computer scientists hold these early legends in the highest regard, resulting in the obsessive use of binary clocks. The challenge with creating a binary clock is to display the number sequence in way that no one has thought of before.

Operation And Features
Use top right button to light up the face of the watch and tell time. The HOUR row has four LEDs which when added up equal the current hour. The MINUTE row has six LEDs which when added up equal the current minutes. While some experience with the binary number system is required, you will quickly become adept at reading the time.

To set the time simply hold the bottom button for 5 seconds. Once the LEDs are flashing you can use the top button to increment values and the bottom button to switch to the next line. The flashing LEDs are bright and can be seen over 25 yards away.

Although never tested by me, the watch is water resistant to 3 ATM or 90 ft. In stock form the watch comes with a soft genuine leather black strap. The strap or watch band is rather weak looking because the watch body itself is about .45 inches thick. Using a CR2032 battery, you can expect a lifespan of 8 months with moderate daily usage. I have had to replace the battery twice, mostly because everyone at my workplace keeps fiddling with the watch during work breaks.

Samui Moon is the actual name for this watch. The manufacturer's part number is SM107B1. The watch also comes with red LEDs, the stock number is SM107R1. I picked the blue LED watch because the red is very bright and hurt my eyes.

Appearance and modifications
The face of the watch has a little green motherboard with LEDs, diodes and transistors. The circuit pathways are clearly visible and can be fun to trace out when you have nothing better to do with your time!

Of course no geek toy would be complete without an upgrade. To make my watch look more professional, I added a stainless steel wrist band. Of course, you could say that I increased my armor level by 1pt, but that is a veiled Dungeons & Dragons reference to nerdy for even this review!

Summary
I highly recommend giving this watch to any friend or relative who works in the computer industry. Everytime someone asks them about their stylish timepiece your name will come up as the fashionable person who gave them their idol to nerd glory!
