VALVe software - makers of the now infamous Half Life series - and the "Orange Box" have released a new flagship.... Left 4 Dead - affectionately referred to as L4D all over the country - you've probably seen a billboard in your town (part of the marketing of the game asked people to submit a picture in front of one of these bill boards for a drawing.)
VALVe has hit another home run in my book. This game focuses on the long running horror flick action of people surviving a Zombie apocalypse. There's a twist though - you can also play as a zombie on-line against your closest friends or complete strangers.
The "campaign" mode offers four "Movies" - complete with a title screen one-sheet while loading that shows your "gamer tag" as playing a particular survivor. Nice touch! The four episodes are "No Mercy" - begins on a roof top and requires you to fight your way through the streets, buildings, and ruins of the city to a nearby hospital (MERCY) then hold off the biggest hoard invasion you've encountered (so far) until the helicopter arrives. The second episode is titled "Dead Air" - you've crashed on your flight out, and now have to battle your way through the airport to a waiting Military plane.... if the first hoard ending was tough - this is ridiculous. The third episode "Death Toll" - requires you to fight through a train yard forest area to a boat dock to float down the river to safety... again a harder end battle awaits - be sure to stay as healthy as possible for hits one. The last and final episode "Blood Harvest" - appears to be based on "Children of the Corn" and has you battling your way through the fields to the final battle in a small farm house.
Part of the fun and attraction for this game is seeing if you can identify the inspiration for each episode. No Mercy is similar to the original "Dawn of the Dead"... the others you'll have to decide for yourself. Dying in an episode with friends playing on-line results in you being "memorialized" in the credits, and gives good laughs.
In campaign mode, you can play as one of four survivors, the old Army guy, a business man, a brute biker guy, or an aerobics instructor looking woman. The graphics are intense, as you play you see the other characters but not yourself, when you die though you get an "over-the-sholder" view of each character by using the tiggers to toggle back and forth. I watched as the Army guy played and the smoke from his never-ending cigarette flowed with movement and never skipped a beat. The running commentary between the survivors and comments about the infected are humorus, and tasteful enough that you don't have to worry about the neighbors hearing them talk. Bill (Army) favors the M16, Louis (Buisness Man) prefers the Mac10, Zoey (the woman) is unstoppable with two pistols, and Francis is the biker guy and he likes him a good shotgun!
The infected range from the standard looking zombie, to Hospital gowned (yes you get to see way to much Zombie butt) and everything inbetween. There are GIANT - Tank Zombies that are very hard to dispatch, a "boomer" that likes to puke on the survivors, a sobbing "witch", and the affections of the smoker will have you laughing all night long!
VALVe has truly taken gaming to a new level with the interactive engine - difficulty based on in-game play, and events that lead to the end.
Get some friends together - split screen co-op for two, on-line co-op for four, or VERSUS where you can play Zombie or Survivor for up to 16 (depending on your broadband) and "Get Some"
