I really wish I could give Left Bank the credit the critics think it deserves, but that will only mean I have to dine there again, and right now, that is the last thought on my mind. My experience at Left Bank probably could be described as "I was at the wrong place, wrong time." A scorching Sunday, a bit pass your regular noon-one o'clock lunch hour, and antzy waiters who wanted to be off their shifts, probably were among the few reasons why my experience at the restaurant went so sour.
Have to admit, the place was trendy and spacious, and the open kitchen which allowed you to see the actions of the busy chefs was eye-catching. Unfortunately, the open kitchen on such a hot day also attracted a lot of flies and bugs. Of all the empty tables in the restaurant, my waiter seated me right next to the open kitchen, and I spent my next hour fanning away friendly little insects. I almost requested a bug-zapper when the waiter asked me what I wanted.
We had a steamed mussels for appetizer, a ham/cheese sandwich and a heirloom tomatoes with shaved fennel and parmesan salad as entrees. The white wine in the steamed mussels was too overwhelming to the taste that the alcohol dominated the dish completely. The ham/cheese sandwich was very decent, but it was so decent that it didn't stand out at all. I'm not a big eater, but I did feel that they could put in one more slice of ham or cheese!! As for the salad, the ingredients made a very pleasing summer dish. The oil for the dressing was just right, not too heavy as if it was drowning the veggies but enough to accent the flavor.
All in all, I hope to say my experience at Left Bank was ok until I remember the service of my waiter. I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt, or for the reason that it was a late lunch and he was probably anxious to get off, but there was truly some attitude problem. He wasn't apologetic at all when we told him that he gave us $10 short in change. hmm...what was that all about?! Well, I may go back to Left Bank, but it sure won't be for lunch on a hot day sitting next to the open kitchen.
