I work in a shop that sells magic and juggling supplies, gags and novelties, costumes and theatrical make-up. As you might expect, the variety of people we see in our shop ranges from children who want to learn magic to professional magicians to those who want to go to the Rennaissance Faire in full regalia to the occasional sideshow performer. We all have our favorite group of folks with whom to work. We are all in agreement, however, about the one class of folks that gives us all the willies - parents buying children overtly sexual costumes.
There are four basic categories of costumes for Halloween; they are scary, funny, cute and sexy. You can actually find costumes that combine up to 3 of 4. As a general rule, teenage girls want sexy. They are experimenting with the limits of their own sexuality. This is the time for parents to set limits. All too often, they do not.
Yesterday we had a woman come in with her daughter. The daughter was 12 years old and had mastered the eye-roll combined with the disdainful phrase "Oh mother!" that will no doubt mark most of her discussions with her parents well into her teen years. The mother was trying to get the girl interested in costumes that were cute and perhaps pretty. She was showing her various pirate wench, witches, cavewomen and cowgirl costumes.
While over by the 30s and 40s style gangster costumes, the little girl saw this costume and told her mother that's what she wanted. The sexy Gangster Girl Costume comes with a crop top and a skirt outfitted with 4 garters. The top is short sleeved with white "cuffs" at the end of the black sleeves to evoke a white shirt peeking out from under a dark suit. The collar is an oversized white collar meant to evoke a dress shirt beneath a dark suit and the wide lapels of the gangster look. It's a great look. Whoever designed this gave a great feel of that gangster look while still creating a very feminine crop top. The skirt is a mini and is the same black as the top. This is a really smart looking outfit. It's the outfit I used when costuming a number on stage where female dancers are supposed to evoke the gangster era or a jazz feel. When I costumed this number, the director also wanted me to come out and crack up the dancers one day. I took one of the tops and split it up the back. I turned the fabric down to create a finished edge. Then I added a few grommets on each side and created a lace up the back version for myself. I made a skirt just as short as the one in the package and wore it with red bloomers. At the appropriate moment, I came on stage and joined the dancers to the sound of much laughter and joy.
I really do like this outfit. However, this is not an outfit that I would recommend for most adults to go out in and party. It is definitely not an outfit I would recommend for a 12 year old. Issues that make this impractical to wear as a Halloween costume is that it is impossible to sit down in this modestly. The skirt is too short for that; it's a real "crotch grabber." This skirt is designed to flash nearly every bit of a person unless the person stands up all evening. I have seen this used successfully as a costume by women who replaced the skirt with a longer black skirt, a pair of shorts, or a pair of pants. This outfit really does feel rather incomplete without the addition accessories such as a fedora. I've also seen it nicely accessorized with a pocket watch, or diamond pinky ring. Probably my favorite accessory was a woman who got a leg holster and strapped a small gun to her thigh.
Would I recommend this outfit? depends. For fetish wear? Yes.... For stage outfit? Yes.... For Halloween costume? No.... and for kids? Never.....
Remember, kids need to hear "No."
