naphtalia's Full Review: Naughty Nun Dress Nun's Habit Sexy Adult Halloween...
Working in a costume shop, I am inclined to like costumes that include bits that can be used as part of a regular wardrobe. The base to most of the naughty nun costumes on the market are little black dresses. This one includes a very little black dress. Unfortunately, this costumes little black dress has issues that make it just a costume piece.
This nun comes with a little black dress of panne stretch velvet. It is cut low in front and has long, trumpet shaped sleeves. It is a micro-mini. Because of the stretch nature of the velvet, I found it didn't stay in place, but was constantly riding up. The accessories here include a long white polyester scarf, and a black head dressing (wimple?) with a white band to represent a coif beneath it.
This costume has so many issues it's difficult to know where to start. The headpiece is made out of fabric that doesn't want to breathe. It's relatively loose, but I still found that the back of my head ended up soaked with perspiration.
The white scarf, meant to resemble a high collar, doesn't stand up well. Worn as shown, it is fine for a picture, but wants to flop down. It is also a dirt magnet and ends up looking dingy by the end of the evening.
The dress itself is an extreme mini. It hardly covers when one is standing up. When one moves or sits, it is impossible to not flash. This, of course, could be solved by wearing the costume with a sexy pair of bike shorts...though it ruins the look the costumer wanted. The sleeves bell out to the bottom. They hang to about the length of the hem if the hem is down where it belongs. this creates a wide line across the widest part of the body. This little black dress actually makes those who wear it look wider at the hips.....not really a good fashion statement.
While I like stretch panne velvet, the stuff used here is thinner than I've seen on any other costume I've owned or worn. It looks cheap. The stretch material also manages to emphasize every bump, lump and bulge. Most of us have something to camouflage. This little black dress takes a woman's flaws, paints them red and points right at them.
Cheap is actually a good word to describe this whole look. There is a fine line between what is sexy and what is vulgar. This doesn't even pretend to try and find the line. This dress will make the wearer look trampy rather than sexy. A friend of mine suggestion that the person wearing this might be called a Hootchie Mama Superior.
Irreverence is the point in dressing as a sexed up nun. It is bound to be perceived by some as heretical. There are those who will certainly find it insensitive and offensive. I recommend keeping in mind who would see you dressed in this kind of costume. I say this kind of costume because I just can't recommend this particular costume.
It's cheap and sleazy. It's sweaty. It's uncomfortable. It is a bad shape for almost every body type. The little black dress which is its base isn't usable for anything but this costume. Even at that, if I had to wear it, I'd probably keep the scarf and headpiece and find a good looking dress. The one here would go straight to my rag bag.
